Texas Poll: Dewhurst 40, Cruz 31
The Weekly Standard ^ | May 21, 2012 | Michael Warren

Posted on 05/21/2012 12:00:07 PM PDT by SwinneySwitch

The Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Texas is now within nine points, according to a new poll. A University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll shows Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst with 40 percent, while his challenger, former state solicitor general Ted Cruz, is at 31 percent. Former Dallas mayor Tom Leppert is in third at 17 percent.

With the the May 29 primary just a week away, Cruz appears to be gaining ground on Dewhurst. He's been aided in his effort to be the conservative alternative to Dewhurst by an endorsement from Sarah Palin, who recently recorded a robocall to Texas voters. "Ted Cruz has defended the Constitution, U.S. sovereignty, and over three million veterans, and he's endorsed by Tea Party Express," Palin says.

Dewhurst, meanwhile, has a new ad featuring Governor Rick Perry, who endorsed his lieutenant last month.

The Dewhurst campaign and its surrogates seem to have recognized the Cruz threat in recent weeks, with both Dewhurst and a pro-Dewhurst super PAC airing ads accusing Cruz of not being a true conservative.

But the momentum may be on Cruz's side, not just in the polls but also in the last-minute money game. The Cruz campaign announced late last week that it raised over $542,000 between April 1 and May 9 and has raised $6.1 million overall. Those are slightly higher numbers than Dewhurst's. While Dewhurst has the backing of the Texas Republican establishment, Cruz has garnered support from national and local Tea Party and conservative movement types.

If no candidate wins a majority of the vote on May 29, the race will go to a runoff on July 31. Many observers believe if Cruz can make it to the runoff, he would have the advantage over Dewhurst.

DUMP ROMNEY and replace him with a stellar Dark Horse.

IF Romney is probably going to lose to Obama, THEN it is incumbent upon the RNC to intervene and declare an OPEN Convention, regardless of the Primary delegates that Romney has.

Continued accumulation of Primary delegates in the remaining State Primaries is the key to improving Paul’s chances of forcing the GOP-E to hold an OPEN Convention in Tampa.

Paul will then have completed his main task in this Primary: giving the delegates the freedom to DUMP ROMNEY!

My goal is to defeat the insanity of Keyensian Economics in “both” of our very sorry political parties THIS YEAR!

This can be accomplished by the Delegates choosing a stellar Dark Horse Nominee, such as R-Rep. West of Florida, to slaughter Obama in a November Landslide.

It is not enough to beat Obama, he must be smashed in a huge landslide to repudiate his Marxist ideas for America!

Romney is not Warrior enough to do so.

The key is to FORCE the GOP-E to allow for an OPEN Convention in Tampa. Without an OPEN Convention the SOS of INSANE Federal Over-Spending will keep America on the same crowded track with Greece, and Kalifornia.

There are over 15, 000, 000, 000, 000 reasons why spending more money this year than was taken in during the previous year is an INSANE path to financial destruction.

Neither Obama or Romney have presented a plan to spend our Federal dollars in a non-insane manner.

For example, the GOP Elite have stood in line to endorse Romney, to endorse “The Ryan Budget,” and to compromise-away every opportunity to reduce Federal Spending.

I included the Ryan Budget, because Rep. Paul Ryan himself says that his “Budget” will balance in 30 YEARS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, I added those exclamation points, because both you and I know that Ryan’s budget will NEVER balance, and thus will never be a fact. The exclamation points are just for volume emphasis.

Dewhurst is one of the worst of the RINOs but he has name recognition.

My family is voting for Cruz. We haven’t been polled by anyone!

I’ve put info out on Cruz on Facebook, and have received comments from friends/family who say they are voting for him also.

Cruz has Sarah Palin & Mark Levin in his corner.

Dewhurst has Rick Perry & Mike Huckabee in his.

Hummmmm.

Pretty clear choice between a TEA Party Conservative candidate and a RINO, Moderate Republican candidate.

I received another of DD’s lying ads in the mail today. He thinks he’s found a way to push conservatives’ emotional buttons (OMG TED CRUZ IS A COMMIE LOVER!), and he’s not about to let up, facts be d**ned.

Dark horse, heck I first thought you were pitchin more RP and the “dark was referring to Dark Side of the Moon”. Only thing RP is running for now is the bank to stash his contributor’s cash.

If Santorum, or Newt couldn’t make a dent in the Mitt parade, its further than a longshot for anyone else, short of Sarah. The way Sarah has been so quite lately, would not doubt she’s probably going to get picked as VP, that would darn sure bring in the Tea Party.

Not a Mitt fan by any stretch, but I’m from the same neighborhood as Rush in Realityville. And reality is either nobama again or Romney.

Ted Cruz, I like him.

However, can anyone tell me why he’s considered a minority?

He calls himself Italian, Irish and Cuban on his wikipedia page. He looks 100% caucasian to me. So why does his ‘Spanish-ness’, from his Cuban father, throw him and people like him, into the minority column? Shouldn’t he be just white, like say, Italians and Greeks are?

Perry, IMHO, had no choice but to endorse his Lt. Gov..otherwise it would be an outright repudiation of the guy. I give Perry a pass for that. Daniels in Indiana had the same problem..he felt obligated to endorse Lugar, based on their long history.

I suspect that Perry's endorsement will be as effective as Daniels' was.

Huck's endorsement surprises me..I wasn't aware of it..Do you have any info as to why he did it? Thanks..

I sure hope Cruz can pull this race off—he’s the best conservative that I have come across in many years......

All we need to do is get Cruz in the run-off with Dewhurst and he wins. The uninformed voter who votes for the name he/she recognizes, will not turn out in the run-off election. GET CRUZ INTO A RUN-OFF AND HE WINS!!!
