Obama pledges no more wars unless "absolutely necessary" Photo 1:00pm EDT

ARLINGTON, Virginia (Reuters) - President Barack Obama honored veterans on Monday by noting "the light of a new day" of having U.S. troops home from Iraq and returning soon from Afghanistan, while promising not to send soldiers back to war without a clear need.

Obama did not mention tension with Iran and Syria in his remarks to veterans and military families at a hot, sunny Memorial Day ceremony, focusing instead on the wars started by his predecessor, George W. Bush, that he wound down as president.

"After a decade under the dark cloud of war, we can see the light of a new day on the horizon," he said at Arlington National Cemetery, drawing applause when he noted the "milestone" of it being the first Memorial Day in nine years without Americans fighting and dying in Iraq.

"As commander in chief, I can tell you that sending our troops into harm's way is the most wrenching decision that I have to make," Obama said shortly after laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

"I can promise you I will never do so unless it is absolutely necessary and that when we do, we must give our troops a clear mission and the full support of a grateful nation."

I don’t think CW2 will create a grateful nation..

Hopefully it will create 2 independent ones.

“Does ‘no more wars’ include the civil war he is so desperately trying to invoke?”

No more wars? Then why has he declared war on capitalism, the constitution, and is trying to start a race war?

Better yet, why not stop the costliest and longest lasting wars to date. Wars that have put our nation in deep debt, continue doing so and have been fought for decades with no victory insight.

Let's stop the War on Poverty, Crime and Drugs. Eliminate the Czars, Agencies, Departments and apply the savings to the national debt.

Note to all candidates, quit promising to fight for me. I don't want a bunch of British soccer fan type of hooligans brawling when I expect you to be legislating.

Stop calling every government action a "war" as if to enhance the validity of the actions and appear to make you seem brave and worthy of our adoration. The next time you clowns pronounce a war it better involve the uniformed military and a declaration by Congress!!!

Every Presidential candidate should promise no more wars without a Congressional Declaration of War as provided for in Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution.

Far too many American "Hero's" have either been killed or wounded in foreign adventures without the Declaration, which gives the politicians and American people a way out from supporting the cause 100%.

Obama pledges no more wars unless "absolutely necessary"

Obviously his fingers were crossed behind his back when he said it... How about all the OTHER wars he's started that he probably doesn't believe we attribute to HIM?

Obama's Gas-Powered War on Coal

The Obama Administration's war on carbon-based energy

Is Obama using culture wars to distract from the economy?

Obama's war on Financial Responsibility

Obama's "War on Women" Campaign strategy is imploding

Obama: My 'social gospel' work dispels 'war on religion'

Obama's real 'war' is against the elderly

Snip: Ironically, the truth is that it is always Mr. Obama steadying Granny in a wheelchair on the precipice of long, steep, marble steps

Obama's war on swimming pools could force hotel owners to take a bath

Snip: In January, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division handed down a new mandate requiring hotels and public pools to provide mechanical wheelchair lifts at both new and existing swimming pools (portable lifts will no longer be sufficient.) These facilities were originally given until March 15 to comply (the deadline was later moved to May 21). Violators could be fined tens of thousands of dollars by the Justice Department.

Bush was one of the exceptions, but virtually all of America’s wars, and especially the major wars, were started by Democrats

I often think of Clinton as having started 9/11.

It's true that Bush finally took responsbility, but had Clinton taken action after the first WTC bombing in '93, prosecuted a real investigation of the USS Cole, and gotten Bin Laden when he had the chance we likely would not have had a 9/11.

Indeed, he is the typical gay serial finance and debt abuser of the American people, and it is his war there.

The man and the believers in him are full of crap.

The catch22 was “absolutely necessary”.

What's "absolutely necessary" will be decided by his campaign advisors.

...focusing instead on the wars started by his predecessor, George W. Bush...

Al Reuters, still lying about history. The Iraq War was started by Saddam Hussein ten years before GW Bush ever took office. The Afghanistan war was started by al Qaeda on the 11th of September, 2001. If we say that Bush started that one, we'd have to say that FDR started WWII in the Pacific.
