Mitt Romney’s nomination marks milestone for Mormon faith

America quietly observed a major milestone in its history Tuesday when Mitt Romney became the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party.

-SNIP-

“If you look at it in a historical perspective, it’s absolutely incredible,” said Richard Lyman Bushman, a leading Mormon scholar and longtime acquaintance of Romney’s. “A century-and-a-half ago, Mormons were detested as a people as well as a religion. They were thought to be primitive and crude. And now to have someone overcome all the lingering prejudice, that’s a milestone.”

If the silence serves a political purpose for Romney, it serves a pastoral one for the church. Mormonism is one of the world’s fastest-growing religions, with as many adherents in the United States as Judaism. Still, about one in three Americans say they have an unfavorable view of the Mormon church, according to a March Bloomberg News poll.

A century ago the notion of a Mormon occupying the presidency was inconceivable.

“This is in a way a natural development in the history of Mormonism,” said Jon Meacham, a journalist who has written extensively on politics and religion. “Joseph Smith and the founders of the church clearly saw America as the new Jerusalem, and therefore for an adherent of the faith to have such a central role in the life of a nation would have been something they dreamed of.”

From the article: “Joseph Smith and the founders of the church clearly saw America as the new Jerusalem...

Based upon Joseph Smith's extremely poor prophetic track record, I think this means America is in for divine judgment.

Id say it was more of a milestone for socialists.

They are going to have a candidate in both major parties this year, if the GOP doesn’t get rid of him during the convention.

Unfavorable view of the Mormon....... That's because it is a cult. Look into it.

Cults, Movements, World Religions
Sects and Satanic Cults

A centuryTen years ago the notion of a Mormon Muslim occupying the presidency was inconceivable.

I am sure Romney thinks he served his country gallivanting around Europe (mostly France) for two years, while you were in Nam.
I mean he has said that his sons have served this country by campaigning for him.
The Romney family has a skewed view of service to country.
Thank you for your service.

Ask Obama how many wives his Daddy had.

Ask Romney how many wives his great/GG grandpas had.

Ask Romney how many wives his Mormon leaders in Kolob post-death will have.

My guess is that about 2/3 would rather have a Mormon that a Moslem and as for me I don’t care if you worship doorknobs if you’re a good citizen...

The problem in a nutshell in our country: People embracing or endorsing idolatry openly...any ole' object of worship is "a-ok"

(Perhaps you didn't notice that the first entity this site is devoted to is "God")

So last election was about electing a mulatto, this election is going to be about electing a mormon, next election...

So I guess this just helps to affirm that PC/diversity is winning in America. We now select and elect candidates based on “identity politics”.

Sick.

Sadlly, their are many Wicca’s in the military. At least they served their country.

I have to admit that I would have a more favorable view of Mormons if I had seen any at all while I was serving in Vietnam

That's odd...I didn't see you either..I guess we never crossed paths,in 1966-67,1969-70,and 1973-4.You could have found a bunch of us at Sacrament meetings aboard most any Naval vessel and at DaNang...at least I could find them.

I judge, from this statement; that you are NOT a Christian.

You're right. I should have said 3/3. My guess is that roughly 3/3 would rather have a Mormon than a Muslim president and they'd all rather not be ruled over by religious blockheads of any flavor. Thank God for the founding fathers.

During the Vietnam war the Mormon church was requesting excessive deferments for their young men. They met with the government and finally agreed to limit the deferments each ward could request for young men to go on missions. It was understood that after finishing their mission the young men would be eligible to serve. Romney got his first deferment to attend college, when he quit school he requested a 2nd to go on a mission. When he returned he request a 3rd to again attend college. He insults the military when he claims his sons serve their country by campaigning for him.
