Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has called on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to review whether metal grill brushes are safe for consumer use, after reports that some metal bristles broke off the brush and were swallowed, sending two men to the hospital.
"Metal bristles are one topping no one wants on their burger this holiday season," Schumer said Tuesday. "Grilling season should be a great time for the whole family, not a time to be worried about an emergency visit to the hospital."
Schumer said men from New Jersey and Washington State were recently hospitalized after swallowing metal bristles that fell off their grill brushes. He said that reports indicate that similar incidents occurred nearly a dozen times over the last three years.

Surely this is not talking about new technology. People have wire brushed their grills for decades. I’m also surprised that metal bristle fragments are staying on the grill wires rather than falling down to the burners or charcoal. Maybe the problem is cheap, ill-tempered Chinese wire brushes. Hosing the grate after brushing (outside of the grill of course) should take care of any metal bristle remnants.
Maybe the brushes were old. Everyone should take their brushes with them to Central Planning when they renew their Cooking License.

Here ya go. It may not be possible to top this, but if anyone can, it’s you.
Since his head somewhat resembles a grill brush, he needs to get his head examined...
Maybe people should take a look at where they put their meat.
“You’re doing it wrong.”
Now, that there's true of a lotta politicians.
I’d like to see helmets required to grill as well.(for the children...)
“Schumer calls for federal review of grill brush safety, possible recall”
How about we recall Schumer! What a busybody.
Not something the government should handle. But all you freepers do need to be careful with those wire brushes. Two summers ago a local 9 year old girl got one caught in her throat. It turned out to be a MAJOR ordeal. The child almost died and now has lasting health issues. It happens more often than you know. Be careful - it’s no joke.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is outmoded and obsolete. They were great when they could go to factories and make sure everything was cool, but now the factories are in China, and the workers don’t speak English anyway, so the CPSC can’t tell them anything. We are now officially On Our Own, and we should defund the CPSC as soon as possible and save the money to spend elsewhere.
You're not supposed to use the BRUSH on the BURGERS.
Here we have another case of the HIGHLY FUNCTIONING RETARDS.
You know.... the people who need a WARNING LABEL on a bottle of Drain Cleaner saying, "Do not ingest. Not for human consumption".
“”Metal bristles are one topping no one wants on their burger this holiday season,” Schumer said Tuesday”
Other than complete idiots, who talks like that?
Obergruppenfuhrer Schumer is on the case! We can all sleep well tonight! What a moron! Get a life (and a real job) Chucky!
Somebody hand him a fiddle so he can play while the country burns.
vaudine
Good point on the Chinese aspect. I’ve been using the same kind of wire brush on the grill that I use for rusty car parts &c for thirty years with no hospital visits.
You use the brush on the grill not the burgers!
