South Africa under apartheid in the 1970s

In the middle of the 1970s, as cracks were beginning to appear in South Africa's policy of racial segregation, a young photographer set out to record what life was like under such a political system.

Then in his early 20s, Steve Bloom - now better known for his wildlife photography - witnessed the hardships facing black South Africans, and the force used by the authorities to try to quell protest.

I remember SA and Rhodesia as prosperous and peaceful places in the '60's and 70's. They were net exporters with large, productive farms.

I would contend that many or the people there, white and black, would gladly go back to the "old days" in order to get rid of their present governments.

I couldn’t help but wonder how many white South Africans were murdered while I watched this?

Well there was the Magoo Bar and Grill where 23 men and women were blown up. Mandela had a hand in that atrocity. His statement was that civilians are also in this war on Apartheid. It was one of the reasons he was jailed.

I visited South Africa twice in the 80’s.I didn’t spend a lot of time there,only saw a small part of the country and interacted with a relative handful of people so I can’t claim to be an expert on the country.I also had the opportunity to talk at some length with the daughter of Helen Suzman,that daughter having been a physician at the hospital where I worked.That being said,what I saw and heard back then doesn’t even remotely resemble the horror stories I read today about the country.

I was born there, in Cape Town in 1957.
We had a housekeeper and a nanny that had to be ‘out of town’, back in ‘their’ home by nightfall.

You never hear about the asian indians and pakistanis, the half white/half blacks, the half black/half asian, and the other mixtures of more than two racial types. There are many of them in SA and they do not mix so well with the black africans either. On top of that there are two different groups of “white” people in SA. There are the dutch speakers and the english speakers. They don’t mix all that much either.

Nope, all they ever want to talk about are the evil whites and all those poor abused blacks they torture just for giggles.

I remember the evening news provided the closing price of the Johannesburg stock exchange and how the dollar did against the Krugerrand. Doesn’t seem that long ago.

Kenya & Uganda deported them when they got their independence; they viewed them as unproductive merchants imported by the British who preyed upon the blacks. That was how Freddie Mercury’s family ended up in England; they were driven from Zanzibar.

Well it is good to know that all that poverty and squalor is gone and South African is now paradise on earth since the blacks have taken power.

BTW here are some photos from the Afrikaner Genocide Museum that will never be exhibited an any London art gallery,( at least 70,000 whites murdered there since Apartheid ended)
