City to regulate "family worship" in private homes.
OCR ^ | 6-5-2012 | edcoil

The City Council gave the first of two approvals necessary to amend the law, agreeing to strike the terms "nonprofit, fraternal and religious" and define "church" as a "legally constituted religious organization for "public" and "family worship" of a deity or deities, together with buildings and uses that are accessory thereto and used for the teaching of religious dogma, accessory social functions and one single-family dwelling for use as a minister or caretaker residence."

50 people is a large number for Bible study. This couple might be better off getting permission from their neighbors.
The city just wants revenue.

Seems there’s a “free exercise” clause in the Constitution, that over rules this ordinance.

Unless your gathering is causing serious, recurring traffic/parking problems, I’d say keep quiet and press on.

Unfortunately, yelling “unconstitutional!” and relying on the judgments of black robed mandarins, who very often are the fellow travelers of this lower grade of traitors, will only move things so far back along the path to reason and freedom.

So if I want to host a weekly prayer group, bible study or small worship service in my home that's now illegal, but if I want to have friends over for a weekly poker and beer night or have frequent raucous parties that's OK.

Exactly. Unless they are parked illegally, there is nothing the ninnies should be able to do.
As a matter of fact, the city should encourage it because they get property taxes paid on these types of churches.

What we need is a law, maybe at the national level, guaranteeing the free exercise of religion and the right of people to peacefully assemble.

That’s a great idea. It’s too bad the Dems would fight to the death to stop such an infringement on their power to control Americans.

It’s amazing how many people seem so complacent with this type of crap. It’s your bible study group today, but it will be graduation and Christmas gatherings next or any gathering the city decides it wants to regulate within your household to bring in some extra revenue for their union employees.

Two problems with this:

First, cities have allowed city streets to become narrower and narrower. There are many around here that if cars are parked on one side of the street, it becomes one lane.

Secondly, when you live near someone that frequently fills both sides of the street, it gets to be a real pain - no matter what the reason.

We used to live near some people that did something to cause great crowds at their house. At first I thought it was sex orgies, but finally figured it had something to do with MLM. At any rate, when getting to an from your house becomes a frustrating exercise - you are more than ready for it to stop!

Exactly! Despite the former being Constitutionally protected, while the latter is not.

It sure is. My neighbors nor I would not like this parking situation each week. If I had parties each week with that number it would be no different. This isn't about religion. You would think that there is a building or a church that could be used for this purpose. Smell the coffee.

In reading the article, it looks like the change was made to accomodate the couple. They were fined because they met the definition of a “nonprofit, fraternal, and religious” organization. It appears the change excludes them from the definition, allowing them to continue the bible study provided they do not violate any nuisance ordinances.
