Recycling to become compulsory in Miami Beach from July 2013 [fines up to $1,000]

Miami Beach - Miami Beach city commissioners have passed an ordinance making recycling compulsory. Effective from July 2013, hefty fines will be applied to transgressors who fail to recycle.

Local 10 reported that Miami Beach commissioners hope the new ordinance will raise awareness about recycling. Fines for those that fail to comply will increase with each violation. First offenders will be fined $350. This will rise to $500 for a second violation and $1,000 for a third violation.

Commercial recycling became mandatory for business owners in Miami-Dade County in 1992, according to Miami Dade, with fines for non-compliance ranging from $300 to $950.

According to a Fox News report, in some U.S. cities "local governments are placing computer chips in recycling bins to collect data on refuse disposal, and then fining residents who don't participate in recycling efforts and forcing others into educational programs meant to instill respect for the environment."

States which have already introduced compulsory recycling include Rhode Island, Kentucky and Nevada.

Ugh! San Antonio is starting to really pizz me off with the recycle crud. I was OK with it but they keep twisting and developing new rules. I’ve had about enough of the cra*!

Recycle has to be dumped directly into those ginormous cans, no plastic bags allowed. Three of me could fit in that durn can—it is HUGE. They have all sorts of water usage restrictions, so cleaning my can on recycle day doesn’t fall under my water allowance.

I keep my cans in the garage and I don’t like having a dirty stinking can! Grrrrrr!

I wish there was a private company—I would pay them on top of my freakin’ city charges to be allowed to use plastic garbage bags!

In my little “township” in NJ, we had mandatory recycling 20 years ago. No big deal. If you didn’t recycle, they just left the garbage sitting there in your front yard.

But this “green police” crap is just too much. Throw the recyclable stuff in their yard to embarrass them and charge them a fair labor rate for the service.

How does anyone know how many "recyclables" you use? Perhaps I don't use any and all that plastic refuse somebody dumped in the street is the city's responsibility to clean up.

Yes, there is grant $$$. Most private waste disposal companies lose $$$ on recycling and fold the loss into general waste disposal. The more folks recycle, the higher everyone's trash bill goes. The market for recycled material just isn't there. The next step (which I am sure we'll hear about) would be for the govt to force companies to use recycled material for certain products.

I don’t know about any government grant, but there’s a lot of money to be made in the recyclable market. Laidlaw picks up many a city’s garbage and takes the garbage into their plants and separates it. Only about 10% goes into a landfill with the rest being recycled.

Only if you are getting that recyc-material, post sorting/processing for a sweet discount (i.e. subsidized by a local govt = your tax dollars). Private companies who are forced to collect recycling acutally lose money unless they are getting grant money, and that usually does not even cover costs. Yes, there is $$$ in recycling, but only for those getting the end product after tax payers foot the bill for processing.
