Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says he believes that the willingness to compromise that allowed Presidents George H.W. Bush and Ronald Reagan to succeed no longer exists in Washington. He faults both parties for the problem.
"My father and President Reagan were successful because they were willing to put policy solutions above political wins. They recognized the president has a significant influence and ability to drive the agenda and used that to find common ground," Bush said in an email to The Associated Press on Tuesday.
"Washington today is hyper-partisan with people speaking off political talking points rather than working together to find common ground to address the issues our country faces," Bush said.
Bush's comments came a day after several news organizations reported that his father and Reagan would have a hard time winning the presidential nomination in today's Republican Party. Earlier Tuesday, Bush used Twitter to say his remarks were taken out of context. He told the AP that he was talking about partisanship in Congress as a whole.
"Both parties are at fault. Rep. Paul Ryan is one of the few who has shown courage. He proposed a well thought-out budget as a starting place for real discussions," Bush told the AP.
"What was he met with -- incredible criticism from both parties. But, I hold Democrats more accountable because they control two of the three offices -- president & Senate. Over the last four years, they have had multiple opportunities and have opted to take the politically expedient route over working together to find a policy solution."
Bush reiterated his view that the tone of the Republican Party often concerns him.
"I don't believe it's a party that doesn't allow for disagreement among members -- but that is often what it sounds like,"

Every time Jeb speaks, my opinion of him drops significantly. When do the Democrats have to compromise, Jeb? Our position is balance the budget. Their side is spend more. We are ending up with a slight reduction in growth of spending. how is that not compromise on our side?
Is Jeb so clueless as to believe Obama wants compromise? If so, where is he seeing that evidence? Does he not realize his words are being used to target republicans and not democrats?
Secondly, is he so dense as to not realize that the exact type of compromise he is seeking is what destroyed his dads presidency and reelection. He calls it part a successful presidency but it caused his dad to leave after one term. Not so successful, in my book.
I’m seeing way to much of this Bush in the media lately.....me thinks We the People are about to see another crammed down our craw at the convention this fall when RomneyRove names him as VP.
Compromise is what Reagan forced the Dems to do. After he got screwed over by compromising with Dems.
Both Bush Presidents compromised and kept compromising and G.H.W. Bush threw away his presidency because of it and G.W. Bush is now the most despised, living ex-president because of compromise. No Child Left Behind and movies in the White Huse with Ted Kennedy!
And this type of RINO crap is what you get from a family that hob knobs with a total asshat who keeps blaming his failures on your son and brother. What father or brother would shake hands with such a total cad?
A true father or brother would give that scumbag the back of their hand and total disdain for his mendacity towards their family.

Actually, the burr in Jeb’s saddle is amnesty. The compromise he wants is for conservatives to shut up while he and his pals legalize about 30 million new Democrat welfare voters while leaving the borders wide open. Daddy Bush was not all that crazy about Reagan’s voters but the family liked Reagan’s amnesty.
COMPROMISE is the tool RINOs use to pry defeat from the jaws of victory. As a matter of fact, it is their favorite tool!
thats nonsense. GOP been compromising every step of the way, while the DEM have refused to compromise. Its one thing to compromise and get half of what you want. The way GOP define compromise is to get nothing at all for Conservatives

There are plenty of accurate criticisms of Jeb Bush. This one is unfair. Terry Schiavo died because her husband sued to remove her feeding tube, and the courts ruled in his favor. Bush had the FL legistature pass "Terry's Law," had the feeding tube reinserted, and gained a temporary reprieve. When Judge W. Douglas Baird of the FL Second Circuit appeals court ruled the law unconstitutional, there was nothing else Bush could legally do.
This wretchedly elitist liberal family has become a diseased blight on the body politic.
Not buying it.
Terri Schiavo had the right to life under the Florida Constitution.
The Governor could have told the judge, that he was overruling him. The Governor had the State Police, not the judge.
Jeb Bush lacked the fortitude to do the right thing.
Judges can be, and often are wrong. The buck stops with the Governor. He has the ultimate executive power to stop what was virtually a death sentence.Remember, her husband had no written proof of Terri’s wishes. It was his word against hers, and there was an a greater societal concern than Mr. Schiavo’s right to kill his wife under his own terms.
He could have said, you have made your ruling, now enforce it to the judge.
He could have appealed, or even had the legislature take the jurisdiction away from the court—the ultimate power is in the legislature, not in the judicial.
But, it wouldn’t be prudent, so let’s let a woman dehydrate and take 13 days to die an excruciating painful death, because the “law” says so.
Sometimes, you just have to do what is right, even if it costs you something.
