Republican Mitt Romney is on the verge of succeeding in what a pair of other prominent Massachusetts politicians failed to do -- become president of the United States -- and that has brought some sour grapes to the political table.
The other two presidential party nominees, both Democrats, were Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1988 and U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry in 2004. Both presidential candidates went into their campaigns ahead in the polls, and both crashed and burned.
Dukakis was beaten by then-Vice President George H.W. Bush, and Kerry was defeated by Bush's son, incumbent President George Bush.
Now comes Mitt Romney, a successful businessman and former governor of Massachusetts, who already has a sagging President Barack Obama on the ropes.
