I would say having a knife pulled on you is a good enough reason to use that extra chop to the throat.

One hopes that you (or a qualified instructor) is also teaching her to shoot. My wife and I don't have kids (wanted but couldn't), but had I a daughter, I would see that she had access to both.

In Texas that young boy would have probably found out he brought a knife to a gunfight.
