Consumer penalties: Part of the controversy surrounding health care reform was that the law would mandate coverage for all Americans on pain of penalties. Those penalties will be tiered and rise over a three-year period that kicks off in 2014, according to the National Association of Consumer Protection:

2014: Families––$285 or 1 percent of total household income, whichever is greater. Individual adults––$95. 2015: Families––$975 or 2 percent of income, whichever is greater. Individual adults––$325. 2016: Families––$2,085 or 2.5 percent of income, whichever is greater. Individual adults––$695.

Maybe I should know but I don't. What's a surplus investment?

Whatever the political elite decide it to be.

What legal immigrants come here poor? None that I ever saw going through the process.

Then you haven't been paying enough attention. For a good while legal immigrants come here and get plopped on SSI and all its attendant goodies. Currently the UN decides who comes in as a legal refugee. And low wage immigrants are subsidized by taxpayers to the amount of $20,000 per household.

Unfortunately it will be my Dad and his wife. Might even bitter comupance.

Can’t believe the man who taught me why it is good to be a Republican turned Democrat years ago.

I just found this ought when I was discussing the ObamaCare.

Seems he and his wife switched parties over....get this....The Clinton Impeachment issue.

They actually think the guy was impeached over a blow job.

I explained it had nothing to do with it, so much as it had to suborning perjury for which he was fined and barred from ever arguing in front of the Supreme Court.

Smartest man in the world, to me, and he didn’t understand this?

Weird.

Then again, I guess all of our parents are weird.

We weren’t bamboozled.

The libs took over our government and forced their 50 year wet dreams on us.

We knew this was going to happen.

I’m just stunned the court upheld it. But now that the court has, there is no limit to anything liberals want to do.

You are casting a very wide brush lumping all legal immigrants in with those in a program you mention. Most legal immigrants do not get government assistance or come here with their last dime in the pocket.

I have direct first hand experience on this subject. The requirements for legal immigration are costly, time consuming AND require the ability to show financial wherewithal. Legal immigrants are not allowed to collect social security until they have worked for 10 years.

Most legal immigrants come to this country, work hard (as in bust their butts to get ahead) and pay lots (and lots) of taxes.

You may have a particular problem with one immigration program but it is very unfair of you to cast all legal immigrants into that group. It is also uninformed. I certainly welcome you to correct me where I am wrong and I would expecially like to learn more about the programs you talk about that provide cash assistance to legal immigrants. My guess is that is for people claiming refugee status but again it is good discussion to have and I sincerely would like to have those details.

“Starting in 2014:
Based on your income, it appears you would be eligible for Medicaid beginning no later than 2014. The law expands Medicaid to all individuals and families with incomes at or below 133 percent of the federal poverty level. But the court found that states cannot be penalized if they decline to comply with the expansion, raising questions as to how effectively the federal government will be able to implement it.”

And what about income either zero or below poverty level, but with lot’s of assets (e.g someone that’s earned a lot of money and “retired” at a very young age.)?

2014:
Families––$285 or 1 percent of total household income, whichever is greater ($21.25 per month)
Individual adults––$95 ($7.92 per month).

2015:
Families––$975 or 2 percent of income, whichever is greater ($81.25 per month).
Individual adults––$325.()$27.08 per month)

2016:
Families––$2,085 or 2.5 percent of income, whichever is greater ($173.75 per month).
Individual adults––$695 ($57.91 per month).

Looks like the cost of this program escalates quite rapidly.

Unfortunately our immigration policies are not designed for the benefit of the US. They are designed to import cheap labor and turn the US into the H.R. and welfare departments for the world.

Political correctness over rides any limitations on legal immigrants collecting goodies.

To start here's a study from FairUS of the cost per low wage immigrant household.

Here's chart A6 from a study by Heritage.

4,550,000 [households] x $19,588 [net deficit per household] = $ 89,125,400,000 in 2004.

An article by Ed Rubenstein: Immigrants Causing One Fifth Of Federal Deficit

Some stats from a study by CIS:
The proportion of immigrant-headed households using at least one major welfare program is 33 percent, compared to 19 percent for native households.
The poverty rate for immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18) is 17 percent, nearly 50 percent higher than the rate for natives and their children.

We currently bring 125,000 new legal workers (green cards and guest workers)into the US each month. Many of these legal immigrants come in as the result of Free Trade agreements that over ride our immigration policies and ignore the current employment situation.

"Just wait until all the moonbats who voted for Obama get hit with this tax. They will go absolutely ballistic.

Those suckers don't understand that they've forfeited thier right to determine what level of healthcare is affordable for them and turned that responsibility over to the government. The government's perspective on affordability has nothing to do with the real world. You'd think that would be obvious to all by now.

Individual adults––$695 ($57.91 per month).

Heck, my Medicare part D costs more than that.

If that's the max penalty I'm dropping my insurance. Would save me hundreds/month.
