GOP critics attack Romney's safe approach

A chorus of prominent conservative voices is worrying aloud that Republican candidate Mitt Romney's play-it-safe strategy is jeopardizing his chance to win the presidency.

As President Barack Obama's campaign intensifies criticism of Romney's background, influential Republicans — right-leaning leaders in business and the media — charge that Romney's message on the economy and other issues is short on detail and muddled at best.

In an editorial Thursday, The Wall Street Journal said the Romney campaign is "slowly squandering an historic opportunity."

"The Romney campaign thinks it can play it safe and coast to the White House by saying the economy stinks and it's Mr. Obama's fault," the newspaper said. "We're on its email list and the main daily message from the campaign is that 'Obama isn't working.' Thanks, guys, but Americans already know that. What they want to hear from the challenger is some understanding of why the president's policies aren't working and how Mr. Romney's policies will do better."

The harsh critique comes as Romney nears the end of a weeklong vacation at his New Hampshire lakeside home, where he has been almost totally out of the public eye, except for a brief Fourth of July appearance. Polls show Obama slightly leading Romney nationally and in several states that are critical in the hunt to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to win the Nov. 6 election.

I disagree. Romney’s entire life’s definition of success hinges on this election. He has been running for 8 years putting in 100 hour weeks raising money. I don’t like Romney and I disagree with his politics and most of his ideas, but I can’t agree that he doesn’t want to win. I think he will get very nasty once people start paying attention and I doubt he will be taking any vacations after Labor Day weekend.

Yeah, name calling is a great way to win an argument. I would say playing the class warfare card is something commie libs do and we should not. That was what Kerry was guilty of and the fact he never earned it while hating his Country.

I wish Romney showed more of his wealth and let people understand this is the Country of opportunity not slink away from it. If that makes me a Romneybot, so be it. I call it being an American and proud of it. You don't like success, go find a Country you do like. I'm sure Korea or Cuba should have a monk like existence you can promote as being one of the Proletariat.

Pray for America

It’s ‘a historic’ not ‘an historic’. You only use ‘an’ if you don’t pronounce the h. I thought better of the WSJ.

Mitt Romney's play-it-safe strategy is jeopardizing his chance to win the presidency.

If I recall correctly, it worked for McCain so why not for Romney. Assuming, of course, that the goal is to finish second.

Double standard.

And yeah, flaunting wealth is a real winner in attracting blue collar votes, especially among the unemployed.

Good luck with that.

Few things here to discuss since everyone is hell bent on taking down our own candidate.

1. Romney made his own money. No one gave it to him. We celebrate this in America. If you have a problem with that, go vote for Obama. Maybe he will give you something.

2. While Obama is spending millions on commercials, ads and travel during the dogs days of the first week in July, Romney is enjoying time with his family, like all Americans should.

3. Obama will eventually go on his annual vacation. By this time Romney is finished with his and will be on the campaign trail. I would rather start slow and end big than shoot my guns early.

4. Everyone is yelling at Romney to get on message. He is on message, the economy sucks, it’s Obama’s fault and it has to change. He can tell us why during the debates when the media cannot lie about it.

You cannot compare Romney to McCain in July. Romney actually ran something and did it with a hostile house and senate. McCain has been part of the establishment for the last 30 years.

I would much rather have a Palin in there but we don’t. The MSM picked our candidate and now we have to shove that down their throats. We don’t have to like it, as a matter of fact we hate it, but it is all that we have and it isn’t changing.

Suck it up and do whatver you can to make sure that we get rid of the cockroaches in November. Leave Romney to the Conservative House and Senate members who will take control in January.

Speak for yourself. Romney is NOT my candidate.

Wrong.

Next for GOP leaders: Stopping Sarah Palin

Your new photo of Romney shows him with a boogie board on what appears to be a regular beach. How is that flaunting wealth?

How about Romney / PALIN?

Huh?

What in the world is with all the negativism around here recently?

You mean the beach he owns and his million $$$$$ California villa in the background?

He's no different than his pal Kerry.

But yet, y'all are perfectly content to carry his water now?

Oh, how the former nose-holders have fallen...

I will make a prediction... if romney wins in Tampa and loses the general election... the gop will break apart. I will certainly do all that I can to purge it of communists or kill it. I really do not care. They have strayed so far from republicanism that they do not deserve to exist. I am talking about6 the leadership and those that control the party itself.

Doesn’t look like a $$$Million villa, looks a bit run down actually. Still don’t understand your point, that Romney is rich? Does anyone not know that?

And I haven’t made my decision on who I am voting for, but if I vote 3rd party, it isn’t going to be because Romney is wealthy, it is going to be because his policies suck.

Pertinent post of the day:

...playing the class warfare card is something commie libs do...

...I wish Romney showed more of his wealth and let people understand this is the Country of opportunity...

Amazing that people haven't noticed

1.Everybody takes as much vacation as they can afford
2.A Romney vacation is comparatively sedate, modest and innocent-- no grand tour to Europe, no Martha's Vineyard ostentation, no Mick & Bianca Jagger 'style'-- just a cottage he bought years ago on one of a thousand similar lakes in New Hampshire. He's content with that.
3. His grown kids are content to join him

Mitt is showing what a vacation ought to be-- a chance to have fun, connect with family, and rest; you can't know how to rest properly without knowing how to work properly.

All in all, I'd say that as a demonstration this is a success.

The campaign merely needs to connect the dots and show that this is within the reach of every American through industry and a little foresight. They need to be more explicit; simple lessons are the hardest to grasp sometimes.

Leading isn't following or reacting. Maybe Mitt's people understand this.

Pray for America

Indeed.

I will turn your prediction into a wish.

If we do not beat Obama the Republican party does not deserve to exist.

Here we face the worst incumbent to ever hold office and we face him with the worst Republican the leadership could find.It is almost as if they intended it that way,

I will do all I can to promote any party that comes along with Conservative ideas and Conservative leadership.
Something sorely lacking in todays Republican party.

“Speak for yourself. Romney is NOT my candidate. “

I believe it’s a given that 99.9% of the people on this site do not want Romney, me included. However I need to look at the reality.

Without our support it will be 4 more years of Obama. We do not have 4 more years. We need a Conservative house and senate who can take someone like Romney and push back against him should he decide to continue with his RINO ways once in the Whitehouse.

We have the party as it is today but today is not tomorrow and these progressive bastards are not all powerful. We the base are. Without us... they are just as small as the reform party. Even if they win... things are either going to change or they had better circle their wagons! Everything you said in you response was dead on.

And that was in the boom years. Mitt should be smart enough to lay low with the shiny things right now. Like all RINOs he seems to only be ruthless when it comes to other Republicans or conservatives.
