I had to do a Wiki search to find the year, but it was the mooslems in the 1300’s that removed the white limestone that coated the pyramids. The stones were used to decorate mosques and even crushed to make roads. So really, this is nothing new at all. If not for Islam we would have pictures of smooth white pyramids and I believe the Sphinx would still have his nose.

You realize that the Metropolitan Museum of Art built a new wing into Central Park around 1985 to house a ton of artifacts on loan from the Government of Egypt? If they demand them back, and the Museum has no legal reason to refuse, they will be left with an empty wing and the antiquities will ride into oblivion.

The empty wing should be called the “Cenotaph of Egyptian Civilization.”

My feelings exactly! If the west had not found and saved the artifacts from the tombs they would all be gone by now. It is the fact that they have become museum pieces that they have value. I am not in favor of them tearing down the pyramids, I haven't been there yet.
