Reorganizing Brain Could Lead to New Stroke, Tinnitus Treatments
Science Daily ^ | 07-19-2012 | Staff

UT Dallas researchers recently demonstrated how nerve stimulation paired with specific experiences, such as movements or sounds, can reorganize the brain. This technology could lead to new treatments for stroke, tinnitus, autism and other disorders.

In a related paper, UT Dallas neuroscientists showed that they could alter the speed at which the brain works in laboratory animals by pairing stimulation of the vagus nerve with fast or slow sounds.

A team led by Dr. Robert Rennaker and Dr. Michael Kilgard looked at whether repeatedly pairing vagus nerve stimulation with a specific movement would change neural activity within the laboratory rats' primary motor cortex. To test the hypothesis, they paired the vagus nerve stimulation with movements of the forelimb in two groups of rats. The results were published in a recent issue of Cerebral Cortex.

The Drs are telling the truth. There is as yet no cure or really effective treatment for tinnitus. There are a bunch of scam ‘organic’ stuff and various electronic devices out there but none that are truly useful..................

It will absolutely stop if you drum hard enough... but you may have to use something more substantial than your fingers.

“It will absolutely stop if you drum hard enough... but you may have to use something more substantial than your fingers.”

Drum for how long? How often? Does this become a permanent solution (cure)?

I've got bad ringing too. I grind my teeth at night and noticed if I slide my lower jaw out, the ringing gets much worse, and the farther I push my jaw back toward my neck, it diminishes. It doesn't go away, but I can start to hear myself think.

So, whatever my particular brand of tinnitus is, it's influenced by positions of my jaw. My theory is that a bad car accident with whiplash and a concussion caused a cascade of minor to severe health issues that inhibit my body's natural healing forces (e.g. no stage 3 sleep to build T-cells and integrate short term memory).

If hard enough, it only takes one good solid blow to the back of the head to cure it permanently. ;o)

To my knowledge there is no known “cure” for sensory-neural tinnitis. Some people experience relief from “masking”, which is putting a narrow band of white noise in the ear with a hearing aid type device... but that can often make speech more difficult to understand. I’ve heard of people sleeping with such devices or leaving the radio on with just static at night.

This doesn’t surprise me. It’s in line with what the neurofeedback people are doing in other areas - doing things that stimulate the building of new neural pathways.

One cause of tinnitus is a blood vein/artery, I can’t remember which, that runs too close to the surface near the eardrum. It can be fixed with surgery, but is very expensive and dangerous to boot.........

A Yanmar Diesel Injector, hooked to the injector pump, but removed from the engine and applied to the mastoid area will end tinnitus (and your ailing career) quickly.

My new Costco hearing aids made it much worse, plus making people knocking on the door sound like TOT Artillery. Drop a pot in my kitchen ... and I may have to shoot you!

That post was probably from me Badge. It didn’t help me at all, but some others at The Steel Guitar Forum said it helped them a great deal. Certainly worth trying!
