Denver police chief upset after wife told not to park at DIA
The Colorado Springs Gazette ^ | July 24, 2012 | AP

Denver Police Chief Robert White says an off-duty police officer at Denver International Airport made a mistake when the officer told the police chief's wife she couldn't wait at the curb as the chief was leaving the terminal.

White says his wife had been circling the airport on Sunday and only stopped when it was time to pick him up.

According to the Denver Post (http://bit.ly/OWjvAg ), White wants officers to be more considerate.

The officer was not identified and the police union says the issue is moot.

So this is now an issue with Chiefy when his wife has to circle the airport and it's inconvenient to him. I wonder what the response would have been if I had complained about the cop that rudely told me to move along when I was picking up my brother from DIA a few months ago and had to circle around. I betcha I would have been told "those are the rules" and to like it or lump it. The officer didn't make a "mistake" Chief White. You are just mad she had to follow the inconvenient rules like the rest of us.

Oh, and what this story doesn’t mention is the Chief got nasty with the cop that told his wife to circle around.

Done the airport run at DIA a few times and was always “impressed” withe the quickness of the police to move cars along....move it or I will ticket it seemed to be the norm.

“White wants officers to be more considerate.”

The government class expects the best of treatment. The rules are for everyone else.

Whatever.

This happens all the time when I pick people up at the airport and at times they are pretty aggressive.

Get over it.

It is one of the only things about increased security I actually appreciate.

Vehicles move out of the airport much faster than they did in years past.

Sounds like he was walking to the car:

as the chief was leaving the terminal

Is the rule you can never stop at this place? What is the purpose of the road then?

Why was the wife circling the airport, Denver International Airport has numerous 'cell phone wait lots'...some only 1/4..1/3 mile away from the main terminal?

You receive a call from your 'pickup', they have their baggage, are walking to the terminal front...start car..drive 1/4 mile..pickup is only seconds.

What am I missing?

I guess she’s special and couldn’t wait in DIA’s perfectly good cell phone lot 3-5 mins away like the rest of us have to do.

If you pull up to the pick up area and your party is not there, then you have to circle back around or find some place to wait. They won’t let you wait by the airport even for a few minutes. The new Chief doesn’t think the rules should apply to him and wife.

Hard to tell from the story but

IF he was between the terminal and the curb,
and
IF she pointed him out to the cop,

THEN

In my opinion the cop was too zealous and I agree with the Chief.

It wasn’t just any wife, it was the police chief’s wife. How could you miss something so totally obvious? /s

It’s exactly the Same at SAN (San Diego). You have to keep circling and can only stop when your party is waiting at the curb for pick up. Otherwise it’s a brusque “move along.”

I can’t post the Denver Post story to FR, but here is the link below. It gives more of his side. Supposedly, the Chief told his wife to keep circling just as if she were one of the peons (if you read between the lines of what he is saying). Personally, I think it’s a bunch of revisionist BS. I have a feeling she might have tried to stop previously during the prior circling, but I don’t know for sure. Anyway, at the end of story the Chief supposedly tells the cop that it’s absurd to make a person leave if the person they are going to pick up is almost out of the terminal. So he admits he wasn’t outside! Believe me, I tried this when I was picking up my brother. I was in contact with him on the cell phone, but it turns out he was on the wrong level anyway, but I didn’t know that at the time. It didn’t work with the cop and there was no arguing with him. It shouldn’t work for Chiefy either. He wasn’t out there on the sidewalk ready to be picked up. Rules is rules.
