U.S. for-profit colleges care more about how much they earn than about their students and need more rules to govern them, according to a U.S. Senate report published on Sunday.
The report blamed colleges such as Apollo Group's University of Phoenix and Washington Post's Kaplan for their poor quality of education and wasting billions of dollars of taxpayers' money.
The report—which concludes a two-year long investigation led by Tom Harkin (D-IA), chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee—mostly reiterated earlier findings, but called for Congress to take legislative action to control the industry. …

This is nothing but a proxy fight for the big lib academia- who are all in bed with the Dems.
If they start regulating the Harvard Trust Fund you know they need the money. Regulating for-profit colleges is just trying to eliminate the competition.
SEIU has direct connections to the Apollo Group by mandating using their schools to train Green and Healthcare jobs.
All I can figure is this is a liberal gov. attempt to shake down SEIU for more support and more $$$.

This is just about the biggest non-problem looking for a solution that exists.
Just get the government out of the lending business. If you need money to go to college, go to a bank, credit union or other lending institution and make a deal with them. It is simply NOT MY PROBLEM!
I’m sure Hillsdale college is at the top of their target list. They just modified their education program and aren’t going to certify teachers directly.
Basically they’re requiring students to get a 4 year degree in a real subject before referring them to Spring Arbor college where they can get the teaching degree. In effect they’re saying, we won’t make you a teacher until you actually know something of substance.

So... which came first? The crappy profit-oriented colleges? Or the flood of student loan money from Uncle Sugar?
This is just another flavor of the housing bubble evil banker problem. The Fed a) guarantees loans and b) forces banks (or colleges) to make them. Surprise! The combination carrot and stick breed a screwed up mortgage (higher education) industry faster than rabbits breed bunnies.
As a society we are dumber than a box of rocks, to continually hit ourselves in the head with the Big Government hammer.

Sen. Harkin is on a jihad against for profit colleges. However the main problem cited that students run up large amounts of student loans for their education from these for profit schools and then cannot get jobs that pay enough to make the loan payments is bogus. I am certain that if Sen. Harkin polled graduates of the University of Iowa Law School or any other state law schools he would find the same problem. When my son took the Minnesota bar exam a few years ago, he was one of more than 600 other prospective lawyers taking the exam at that time and about an equal number take the exam each year. Many of his law school classmates had a great deal of trouble finding jobs in Minnesota let alone jobs that allowed them to comfortably pay off their often 6 figure student loans. That for profit school offer worthless degrees is also bogus ...just ask any graduate of a state school with a degree in Peace Studies, Feminist Theory, Ancient History or other trendy liberal arts degrees.
A friend of mine has a BA degree in Justice from American University and cannot understand for the life of him why he can’t get a decent job. His degree cost 120K which is what he thought he deserved to get upon getting the almighty American University degree. He can’t even get an interview most of the time. Kinda sad but at least his parents paid the bill so he does not have any student loans but still....no decent job. Justice???? lol. What was he thinking? I did not know him at the time so I was not able to pound some sense into him. Too bad somebody didn’t take him a side and talk to him and get him to major in something worthwhile....oh he graduated from college in 2004....he makes 13 dollars at a non-profit part time. He wants a six figure full time job with a degree in justice....you know he thinks it is not fair that he has not been handed it yet....lol.

They never consider the obvious, which is to ban student loans for humanities degrees.
STEM + Business (excluding "marketing" and "management," which are not real subjects anyway) should be the only degrees that are student loan eligible.
As opposed to the "altruism" of blood-sucking parasite public colleges?
A government take over? Well......if these colleges were to , you know, maybe donate millions to the DNC, this little "educational crises" problem could easily go away.

Let’s have the same rules for profit and nonprofit. So what about all the unemployed English majors graduating from nonprofit colleges, many of whom still don’t know how to write correctly? The unemployed black studies, etc., majors? The law schools at nonprofit universities that are churning out twice as many graduates as jobs available?
And when did vocational schools become responsible for placement as well as teaching? If a private entity fully equips a student with a skill like welding, it’s the student’s task to get a job, not the school’s task to place him.
