The tea party partnered with local Sierra Club and NAACP officials to defeat a $7.2 billion referendum aimed at unsnarling Atlanta’s traffic. Voters voted no on the referendum by a margin of 63 percent.
The establishment bipartisans had a reported $8 million on hand to sell the transit package. The tea party alliance has been quoted as having $15,000, but tea party member Julianne Thompson, reached by the Monitor Wednesday, laughed that off. “We had maybe a few hundred dollars,” she says.
On Tuesday, the “Sierra Tea” nexus claimed giant-killer status: Voters shot the Transportation Investment Act down, yelling “no” by a margin of 63 percent – despite warnings from supporters of imminent urban decline and worsening traffic woes. About 670,000 metro Atlantans voted.
The transit-tax defeat came on the same day that Texas tea party favorite Ted Cruz handily beat Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in that state’s GOP Senate primary, suggesting to some observers that reports of the tea party’s demise have been not only hasty, but also overamplified.

My Friend/s Nolan Cox (and Diane) played a large part here in Central south Georgia! And man has a can of worms been opened for the establishment GOP who push this beast! Their time is coming and they still do not see it.

Funny that was the original stated purpose but then the statements started to say “no money would go to Atlanta” and when asked how it would help with the traffic there they would say that’s not the reason for it, It’s for your region only... Funny how time and audiences changed the message/purpose.

Be very careful when you deal with the Sierra Club. They are of Agent 21.
Transit projects NEVER reduce traffic because that is not their purpose, which is in reality to subsidize developers and pay off unions.
Nolan and Diane are good folk.
Small government people have either taken control of or have good relationships with many county level GOP parties around here and to a lesser extent statewide.
However, we have a long way to go in the state GOP party. The Ron Paul/TEA party small government people were absolutely railroaded at the convention. Furthermore, Jay Robets, author of this monstrosity, ran unopposed in yesterday’s primary. Bummer.
I know the state leadership is a bunch of Rockefeller types and need to be voted out. The only way to accomplish that is to outvote them on the floor (assuming fair counts are made and rules are followed, not the case recently). It can be done, but must be done next year at the district level and then the state officer elections.
Here is how. Last year, an off year state convention, there were 1100 some odd delegates on the floor. Leadership elections are done in off years. This years state convention had 1400 plus delegates seated. If all county parties filled their delegate slots, there would be 1800 plus on the floor.
Some counties will never send delegates. Twigg springs to mind! But there are enough slots available in many counties that some small government people could go undercover, start helping this election, attend meetings, etc so they get to be state delegates NEXT year!
If the delegate count at next years convention is 1500 or so instead of 1100 and the new folk are small government folk, we can turn this around at the state level and be ready to move to bigger targets.
Fascinating example of politics making odd bedfellows.
The sierra club and other enviro groups have actually been fairly effective at defeating some of these bloated roads projects. Their perspective as I understand it is that building more roads is just an endless do-loop. Natural allies to organizations trying to defeat the same projects because of the tax implications.
Heck we should be willing to talk to anyone. I even advocate talking to the gop-e. Just be prepared to look out the window and check when they tell you that the sky is blue.
I agree its a sin no one ran against Roberts, Tony thought about it a bit but was not ready to go against the machine. You are also right in what needs to happen even more over the next two years with taking more spots...
I do know Diane and Nolan are good folk, I have worked with them on several items over these last several years and if you have also we probably have meet at an event or two in Valdosta.
Perhaps it was our disgust with more taxes and not some group instructing us to vote. I didnt see any sign of the organizations so why they are stepping forward for our desire for killing another tax is insulting.
