New York takes further steps to encourage breastfeeding

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and state officials are pushing initiatives aimed at encouraging new mothers to breastfeed their babies, drawing criticism from some parents who say officials are interfering with their health choices.

State health commissioners announced on Tuesday that letters highlighting the importance of breastfeeding were being sent to hospitals, reminding them of regulations limiting unnecessary formula feedings for breastfed newborns.

The state initiative coincides with Bloomberg's call for hospitals to lock away their baby formula and have nurses encourage new mothers to breastfeed.

“Unnecessary” is subject to debate but not impossible to become appropriate. Anyone calling this “fascism” should brush up on the subject.

It will be the Feminazis who will object most to encouraging breast feeding.

Unless you want the milk from fridge that somehow separated into curds and whey.

It’s not for government to dictate.

You said: As to the mothers poisoning their babies I am not very forgiving. Take the children from them.

I'm pointing out that if your ideals were implemented in full, there would necessarily be a loss of liberty.

And no one is dictating anything so don’t worry about too much dictating.

Yeah. Because one of the basic functions of government is being in charge of breastfeeding. It's right up there with defense and foreign policy.

You can't make this stuff up.

No, you have it backwards. The Feminazies already demand that breast feeding be made mandatory and public.

'State health commissioners announced on Tuesday that letters highlighting the importance of breastfeeding were being sent to hospitals, reminding them of regulations limiting unnecessary formula feedings for breastfed newborns."

RIGHT THERE IT IS ~ top of the article too.

See the term "Limiting unnecessary formula feedings" ~ that's a tad subjective ~ "Unnecessary" ~ is authoritarian.

First, you left out three important words: "limiting unnecessary formula feedings for breastfed newborns." This is aimed at hospitals that give formula to breastfed newborns (e.g., newborns whose mothers CHOOSE to breastfeed), sometimes against the stated desires of the parents. This provision has no effect on new mothers who choose not to breastfeed. If a new mother chooses to give her kid formula, participating hospitals won't stop her, and will provide that formula.

Second, to the extent "unnecessary" is authoritarian, that word is from the report about this program, not from the program itself. A more accurate phrase would be "without medical indication."

“The goal should be 100%.”

Not for the government it shouldn’t. It’s none of their dang business whether mothers decide to breastfeed or not. I certainly don’t want them spending my tax dollars worrying about it.

Nurses will interpret the rules as they have time. If the rules say NO FORMULA, that's what will happen.

No wonder people find it necessary to bring guards to hospitals these days ~

The rules already say no formula for breastfed infants without medical indication. This is not a new rule. All the "no formula for breastfed infants" provision of this program means is that participating hospitals agree to abide by the already-existing rule.

And, again, this is intended to be a counterbalance to the policy/culture/practice in some hospitals to give formula nearly always (even, as happened with my daughter, when the parents specifically instruct otherwise).

No one is “forcing” mothers to do anything here.

Not yet........but just you wait.

What "force"? It's a voluntary program. Even within the participating hospitals, it doesn't force anyone to breastfeed.

This is Bloomberg - his "suggestions" become mandates, mandates are not voluntary. He is also telling hospitals they have to justify every bottle of formula given.

I'm sorry, but nothing coming out of the health department/mayor's office in NYC can be trusted.

Everything you said is perfectly correct.

I’m sick of these so called “conservatives” who have no problem with government edicts that agree with their own personal agendae and totally miss how they are just feeding the beast.

Not a single nurse said a single word to me about formula when my daughter was born and I don’t know any woman who has had a child in the past 20 years who has heard any such thing. Guess I just live in the wrong place where mothers are allowed to make their won decisions about such things.

Thank goodness I let NYC when I turned 22. As bad as it is admitting I was born and raised there - I would be truly embarrassed to have to admit I lived there.
