'Andy Murray captured the biggest title of his career with an emphatic victory over Roger Federer in the Olympic men's singles final at Wimbledon.

Murray beat the Swiss world number one in straight sets, 6-2 6-1 6-4, on a raucous Centre Court.

The 25-year-old Scot had never beaten Federer in a best-of-five-sets match and lost to him in the Wimbledon final.

He is the first British man to win the Olympic singles gold medal since Josiah Ritchie in 1908.

Murray plays the mixed doubles final with Laura Robson later on Sunday.

The pair face Belarusian top seeds Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi knowing they are guaranteed at least a silver medal.

Murray's singles triumph - completed in just an hour and 56 minutes - continues a glorious home Games for Team GB, who sit third in the medal table.'

Good for Murray - he’s on the way up.

He has a complex and it will still be a serious uphill climb for him to win a major. He will... but it won’t be like today.

Spoken by a true Scot.

If someone wants to avoid ‘spoilers’ on Olympic events that happened hours ago would be to turn off all media including your computer. It is all over the internet and was just mentioned on a break on NBCSports.

Spoiler Alert- The Titanic Sinks.

It won’t take long to watch. It was fast.

Murray hit everything and Federer missed everything.

The amazing thing is...in about 30 minutes, Andy goes BACK out there to play with a female partner in the Gold Medal game in Mixed Doubles tennis.

Yowza.

A great story today. Murray wins in front of the hometown crowd, on the court he was pounded on just a month before. Federer was very gracious, as well, as he stood around and took lots of photos with Murray and let him enjoy his moment.

All in all, a great day for the sport, a great day in the Olympics.

Hark when the night is falling
Hear! Hear the pipes are calling,
Loudly and proudly calling,
Down thro’ the glen.
There where the hills are sleeping,
Now feel the blood a-leaping,
High as the spirits of the old Highland men.

Bartender, singles malts all round!

To be fair, Federer’s last match was the longest in Olympic history, so he may have been just a bit tired and sore.

They are not going to show it again. That’s why they showed it live.

It is like the Super Bowl, it’s played and NBC moves on.

Well done Andy and all Team GB for an excellent performance so far this Olympics.

34 medals so far puts us third - the US have 22 medals more despite having five times the UK population and China 25 more despite having 23 times the UK population.

Always nice to punch above your weight!

I tried to tell myself that too except Delpotro, who was in that long match with Federer, beat Djokovic in straight sets to win the Bronze.

As a Brit I am naturally thrilled than Andy Murray won, but that does not diminish my respect for Roger - probably the greatest exponent of tennis ever....and a true sportsman.
