FACT CHECK: Questionable claims in veep debut (AP at it already)
AP/pioneer press ^ | 8-11-12 | CALVIN WOODWARD and HENRY C. JACKSON

WASHINGTON—In his debut as Mitt Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan promised "America's comeback team" won't duck tough budget issues, although the man standing next to him has kept his head low so far. Romney vowed the duo would "preserve" Medicare, an eye-popping claim considering Ryan wants to transform the program from the ground up. Not all the rhetoric fit neatly with reality or with the record when Romney introduced his Republican vice presidential choice to the nation Saturday. A look at some of the claims by the Wisconsin congressman and Romney, and how they compare with the facts.

ROMNEY: "Unlike the current president, who has cut Medicare funding by $700 billion, we will preserve and protect Medicare and Social Security and keep them there for future generations."

THE FACTS:

This ain’t nothin’. JUST wait til after Labor Day. The press is going to go HARD after Romney/Ryan.

Quite frankly, I just see this as setting up 2016 for Ryan to run for POTUS.

Should Obama win a 2nd term, what makes you think there will be a 2016 election?

Oh, there will be an election. Even Communist Russia had elections. They were sham elections, but they were elections. As Stalin said, "Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything."

If Obama wins a second term, he will do all in his power to stuff the ballot box by speeding up citizenship for the alien invaders, eliminating voter identification requirements, and selectively suppressing GOP-oriented voting groups, like he is doing with the military in Ohio.

Numbskulls don’t understand that the only way to preserve Medicare is to overhaul it.

Ap, Reuters etc write for total;l morons who exist on 4 word sound bites.

Romney/Ryan claim to “preserve and protect Medicare for future generations” does not mean maintaining the status quo. Ditto SS.

A program can be changed i.e. improved without being terminated. Notice the libs don't claim Ryan will do away with Medicare, only that he would “do away with Medicare AS WE KNOW IT”

Ryan's plan would save Medicare for many future generations as would the privatization of SS.

That is the argument Ryan is going to have to make — that the reforms he wants to put in place will actually preserve and save programs like SS and Medicare.

It is a VERY tough sale. Historically, Republicans have been obliterated when they have tried to make it.

Hopefully, we can pull it off this time, but I don’t have a lot of confidence in an American electorate that voted in a Kenyan Socialist by a large margin last time, and have him ahead in most polls today.

An interesting Gallup Poll showing that Seniors prefer Ryan’s budget plan over Obama’s.

“Ryan’s plan includes a complete restructuring of Medicare for people younger than 55. Pluralities of middle-aged Americans as well as those 65 and older prefer Ryan’s plan to Obama’s....”

Ahead in most polls? Oh you mean the ones in which they poll 8-12% more Dems and then National Adults or Reg voters?

LOL, even NBC’s own Chuck Todd admitted the polling is skewed toward Democrats.

Yeah, Ryan is so effing radical he wants PEOPLE TO BE IN CHARGE OF THEIR OWN MEDICAL INSURANCE and NOT GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRATS.

Damn, he is soooo crazy.
