Embattled Senate candidate Todd Akin just told reporters in Chesterfield that he is staying in the Senate race against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill.

Akin repeated the kinds of statements he'd made previously to national media, asserting that he's never had the support of the Republican party establishment anyway. [...]

It has nothing to do with him being pro-life. It is about marketing. His statement was stupid and it played into the ‘war on women’ narrative. Worse was how he handled it. He could have taken an aggressive approach after he made that err and not only apologized, but gone on the offense with the media ignoring worse statements by Dems such as Biden and Frankin but also pointing out that he is the one for saving a life versus murdering the baby due to the rape.

It was poor PR and changed the discourse of the campaign. There is no denying it. It isn’t just about being right on the issue, it is also about being able to control your mouth and win people over to your side.

You are absolutely right. I will do just that. If Akin drops out, the GOP-e will win a battle, but conservatives will lose the war (of principles). If Akin does not drop out, the GOP-e will lose the battle (who cares!) but conservatives will at least hold on to their principles! That is far better than losing the war of principles but caving to GOP-e, aka abortionist central. Self respecting pro-lifers do not makes exceptions for murders of babies. Murder of defenseless children is wrong and I will put my money where my mouth is.

Good and get everybody you know to give twice as much.... Conservatives are about personal responsibility not wagging tongues, and since the Akin supporters got their way they have a big responsibility to fund him.

We need to hold on to our principles, win the Senate, increase our control of the House and win the WH.

Anything less = ObamaCare

The problem is Todd Aiken won in a three person race. He got a simple majority to win the nomination. Once he won he showed his true “heart” on rape - similar to the “gaff” “mispeak” of Obama’s “you didn’t built that business”."

Actually, he only got a plurality - 36% with a huge bounce due to McCaskill's forces running ads labeling him too conservative which gave him a big bounce near the end of the campaign. McCaskill pushed Akin over the finish line and she is now reaping the rewards of picking her opponent.

Maybe there’s some of that, but the abject rejection of what he stands for, and has voted for, is far worse.

I'm not sure how many people reject whatever it is that he "stands for" or "votes for," so I couldn't say that it is "far worse." It might be - if the rejection is ultimately Christ's gift of salvation - but I'm not sensing that to be what Todd Akin's supporters are fixated on.

He may be the right guy for his congressional district, but senate-level Matthew 10:16 he's not. I personally don't think his candidacy - which I am not saying is his "cause" - is as important as he, Mike Huckabee and a number of people who apparently automatically trust clerics of their own creed think it is.

Bachmann refuses to be connected to Akin in any way, probably a smart move on her part. She has a tough election to win and doesn’t need any “help” from Akin. I can’t blame her, can you? (rhetorical question)

She was thrown under the same Liberal PhonyCon Bus a few weeks earlier by the same “GOP-e” that threw Akin under the bus this week.

Her only saving grace was that the Liberal GOP Media are a little more afraid to be called “pro-terrorist” than “pro-abortion”...or they would have gone lock-step. goose-step with the McCain, Graham, Rubio, Boehner, etc, Liberal PhonyCons

I would like to see the GOP-e try to attack Steve King on his support for Akin....I dare you....

“They obviously did not poll above Akin”

YES THEY DID. Brunner and Steelman ran stronger than Akin against McCaskill, even before the blowup that has ruined Akins’ chances. Both had double the lead that Akin had in the Aug 1 Ras poll.

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/archive/election_2012_archive/missouri/missouri_mccaskill_still_trails_but_closes_gap

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Missouri Voters shows State Treasurer Sarah Steelman and retired businessman John Brunner each leading the incumbent 49% to 43%. If the race is between McCaskill and GOP Congressman Todd Akin, it’s Akin 47%, McCaskill 44%.

McCaskill ran ads to help Todd Akin beat the other two:
http://www.theatlanticwire.com/politics/2012/08/claire-mccaskill-and-how-attack-opponent-youre-rooting/55550/

It paid off: Now Akin trails by 10, post gaffe ...

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections/election_2012/election_2012_senate_elections/missouri/election_2012_missouri_senate
- McCaskill earning 48% support to Akin’s 38%.

Akin is now UNELECTABLE and the race is now “solid Democrat win”:

Good. Claire McCaskill says the Rasmussen Poll is wrong. She says there is no way she can win. In fact she is almost ready to withdraw from the race because Akin is such a formidable candidate. Send him some money so you and Claire can get this guy into his rightful place into the Senate. I too want to be toll for the left. Do you give classes?

The old allusion to “stubborn as a Missouri mule!” which was once applied to Harry S Truman, holds for this paragon of perseverance and recalcitrant truculence.

So he cannot see the larger picture, and still believes himself on a mission from God. He has become the very caricature of a single-issue candidate, and we shall NEVER know any of his positions on any other issue that is of really pressing importance, both to Missouri and the US as a whole.

He cannot melt down, because he believes himself to be made of titanium.

And lo, though ten thousand angels come before him, weeping, beseeching and downcast, he cannot turn aside. Clearly, he has become the Indispensable Man, the True Savior, on a holy quest.

What the heck, he might win. If not....

"We have lost any chance at the Senate, and will be stuck with o-care, all thanks to Akin"

Maybe not. I hope he wins, since he's determined to hang on, but even if he loses, there are other opportunties to pick up seats.

Stay positive.

“We should all agree to take a timeout on the Akin fiasco.”

“I agree 100%!” tsowellfan

OK, we’ll all remember that when one of your buds posts yet another, “Gee, exactly how long has Aiken been beating his puppy? Inquiring minds want to know!” threads .... you pro-choice GOPers all want a conservative scalp.

That’s what it is. Admit it.

Most of us will remember all of this come the first week in November. Why should we—the pro-life—support anyone who wishes us ill?

http://townhall.com/columnists/dianawest/2012/08/24/wake_up_gop_and_quit_ostracizing_todd_akin

“But as the left began to bay for blood over a Republican and, by preposterous extension, Republican Party it hopes to smear as “anti-woman,” Republicans across the board, incredibly, joined in. Rather than jouncing Democrats back into some semblance of decent behavior with a firm, partywide reality check — comparing a dumb comment about rape from one among their ranks with, say, accusations of actual rape against Democrats’ two-term hero Bill Clinton — Republicans obligingly cut off their own noses and handed them to their political opponents.”

With friends like this, we don’t need enemies.

the “principle” behind standing with Akin is the same principle behind the illfated Pickett’s charge.

Sometimes dumb ideas are just dumb ideas.

And btw, Akin’s “fight the party bosses” is bogus BS. Who cares about that... the question is can we win the seat ... the answer is “Not with him!”

But since there has been all this itching and whining about that mean ole GOP not playing nice and being all mean, the least his supporters can do now is fund his campaign.

I'm sure they'll do what they can. ;-)

“What a selfish moron. The GOP should have nothing to do with the idiot and run a write in candidate.”

I think that that’s in the offing. especially now that the poll are showing a 19 point swing since this jerk opened his yap. My guess is that he has some paid staff who are urging him to say in because it’s their paycheck, along with an ego so big that he steps on it!

McCaskill does not want her prize toy withdrawing before Sept 25. So she will spent part of her 12 million dollar war chest with positive ads about herself before that date without attacking him. She would not want to get too far ahead of him before that date for fear he will withdraw.Come September 25 she will unload on him with every one of her ads ending in 2 words “legitimate rape”.

Correct, and very predictable to those who've seen this kind of thing before. There's a good reason Charlie Cook has called the race ALREADY for McCaskill.

He should have been busted down to mere voter simply for seeking to be interviewed by that far leftwing extremist who sucked the 'abortion exception' business out of him.

The guy is too naive to represent his interest group.

Be much better to have a Conservative running in his place.
