Barbara J. Easterling:We Must Educate Younger People About Unions
AFL-CIO ^ | 9/02/2012 | Barbara Easterling

Posted on 09/03/2012 12:09:29 PM PDT by mdittmar

Barbara J. Easterling is president of the Alliance for Retired Americans. She was previously the secretary-treasurer of the Communications Workers of America.

As we near Labor Day, I want to encourage you to help younger generations better understand why labor unions are so important. Too many people either know very little about unions or only know what politicians and Fox News tell them.

I joined a union on my very first day on the job as a telephone operator in Akron, Ohio. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Our generation—and those who came before us—used our rights at work in the community to create good jobs and good wages. We helped build strong neighborhoods where you could raise a family.

In my experience, a union is the only way workers can earn good pay and be treated with respect and fairness on the job. It’s just too tough any other way.  When you look at the powerful interests that workers are up against—whether it is right-wing politicians or cold-hearted corporations—you see how badly the deck is stacked against you if you don’t have a union.

Well, the liberals are too involved with teaching kids about homosexuality and their sexual choices and values clarification, so there’s no time to teach them about unions.

I agree with Babs. We must educate younger people about unions. If they knew the truth, they would run away from unions as fast as they could.

We Must Educate Younger People About Unions

I wholeheartedly agree with that one statement.

I totally agree. In fact I take every opportunity to talk to my children about unions. Violence, organized crime, extortion, sabotage, vandalism, assaults on non-union workers. And that is just MY experience with them. Unions are a cancer which ultimately destroys every business/industry that they get their hooks into. I teach them well, Babs, I teach them well.

Workers unions are nothing more than extensions of Marxist philosophy.

Why do I say that?

You want to educate kids about unions? Take them to a plant and show them all of the workers sitting on their butts reading the paper.

ALPA (Air Line Pilots Assn) was fine until it started sticking its nose into political areas which did not pertain to aviation. Then they jumped the shark and are now just another extension of the Marxist ideologue AFL/CIO bosses. Sleep with dogs, wake up with fleas.

Several members of my family were founding members of the Typographers Union in 1858, the family had been Typographers and Printers since 1640.

Today there are no Typographers, as such. They priced themselves out of a job.

You "joined" of your own free will or were forced to join the union as a condition of employment?

Did you freely give your union dues or were union dues taken out of your paycheck without your consent?

Yeah - young people know a scam when they see it

I joined a union on my very first day on the job as a telephone operator in Akron, Ohio

The kids are a lot more media-savvy than you, Barbara. They have access to all kinds of information about unions. If you don’t believe me, just go out to YouTube and search for “union thugs”.

I agree. Educate them about the thuggery, the busted heads, the riots, the coercion, intimidation, and threats. Teach them the bloody history of the Teamsters and the Food and Commercial Workers and the Ironworkers and Longshoremen and the rest of their deadbeat, strongarm ilk. Have them learn the terms "featherbedding", "protectionism", and "nepotism." Tie it into their math classes so they can calculate the absurdity of paying a drunken slacker $40/hr to sleep during his shift so that the union gets one more clown on the payroll and one more set of union dues every payday.

Yeah, let's educate children about unions. That will guarantee that this is the last generation they will ever plague.

Having lived as a young boy during the depression and heavy handed unionizing days of the early 1930s I am now a believer that unions no longer represent, as they sometimes did, the best of free human endeavor, as this lady displays and speaks for. But unions today represent the collective forcing of a populace to accept any and all social malcontents who must rely on numbers to receive their ‘due?’. I know of no unions of which it can be said it’s leaders are/have the conscience of the independent idea and hopes of the Founders. As for me all unions, yes all, of public employees under public money contract should be abolished, the sooner the better in this day and age.

We do educate our children about unions. When they go back to school and ask why the best young teachers were laid off when the worst teachers still have their job, we explain about union contracts and seniority. When we drive see construction work on the same stretch of interstate highway for 4 or 5 years in a row, and our kids ask why the work never seems to get finished, we explain to them about unions.

Yes, we must!

We must let young Americans know that labor unions are the last gasp of the infatuation with Marxism that swept the country during the "Progressive" era of Teddy Roosevelt and Wilson.

We must also let young Americans know that, if they don't like working for "capitalists," they are always free to work for themselves. There's still no law against that.

Of course, if you want to work for yourself, then it will be up to you to mortgage your house or indebt yourself to investors on the slim hope that your idea can become profitable. If you go to work for someone else, then he has to save the money or beg for the funding that will pay your wages until the customers send in their payments.
