If you look at Firestone, et al.’s book, there is a photo of the bed of Lake Michigan. It shows two definite crater formations and probably a third smaller on at the “waist” of the lake. I don’t know if the angles would be enough to explain variations in the orientation of the Carolina bays, but the idea that there were two or three strikes that formed Lake Michigan suggests that there may have been other strikes as well. One could draw sight lines from the Bays to see where some of them converge. Who knows, there may be undiscovered craters out there.

Thanks gleeakin. I suppose there could be any number of causes for this “deposit”. Although I’ve not studied the subject it’s my impression that lahars are generally readily identifiable. Maybe not. We don’t know much about the medium these bones were found in except there was apparently a fair amount of sand. Gravel, ash, charcoal? Splintered and mangled trees? We don’t know yet but I have my suspicions since the timing is coincident with other bone yards around the world where much of this detritus is present.
