Fla. police officer in Obama motorcade killed in accident
By Meghashyam Mali - 09/09/12 08:30 PM ET
A police officer in President Obamas motorcade was killed Sunday after being struck by another vehicle.
Palm Beach County Sheriffs spokeswoman Teri Barbera said the motorcycle officer was on Interstate-95, assigned to close the roadway when he was hit by a pickup truck, the AP reported.
He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the officer.
President Obama was in West Palm Beach, Fla. his second stop in the state Sunday for a rally at the West Palm Beach Convention Center.
Upon his return to Andrews Air Force Base, Obama was notified that the officer in the crash had passed away, said White House press secretary Jay Carney, according to a pool report.
The sheriffs office said an investigation was ongoing and that no charges had been filed yet against the driver of the pickup truck.
Deeply sorry. Deepest sympathies to his family.
Please remember that a good man laid down his life for his
Country. May God give his family peace during this tragic time.
I have to say that I’m surprised it hasn’t happened more often. I’ve actually been a driver in presidential motorcades before and depending on the location and traffic, those cops are usually going through some hair razing moves to keep the whole thing moving — usually at pretty decent speeds.
“Bath-House Barry”
I am gonna start using that phrase.
Thanks!
Aye--did it once for Bush 41. NEVER again.
The whole idea of police on motorcycles makes no sense to me. Horses either. 4 wheels are better than 2 and 4 wheels are better than 4 hooves.
RIP.
