Cultural Clash Fuels Muslims Raging at Film
New York Times ^ | September 16, 2012 | DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK

CAIRO — Stepping from the cloud of tear gas in front of the American Embassy here, Khaled Ali repeated the urgent question that he said justified last week’s violent protests at United States outposts around the Muslim world.

“We never insult any prophet — not Moses, not Jesus — so why can’t we demand that Muhammad be respected?” Mr. Ali, a 39-year-old textile worker said, holding up a handwritten sign in English that read “Shut Up America.” “Obama is the president, so he should have to apologize!”

When the protests against an American-made online video mocking the Prophet Muhammad exploded in about 20 countries, the source of the rage was more than just religious sensitivity, political demagogy or resentment of Washington, protesters and their sympathizers here said. It was also a demand that many of them described with the word “freedom,” although in a context very different from the term’s use in the individualistic West: the right of a community, whether Muslim, Christian or Jewish, to be free from grave insult to its identity and values.

That demand, in turn, was swept up in the colliding crosscurrents of regional politics. From one side came the gale of anger at America’s decade-old war against terrorism, which in the eyes of many Muslims in the region often looks like a war against them. And from the other, the new winds blowing through the region in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, which to many here means most of all a right to demand respect for the popular will.

“We want these countries to understand that they need to take into consideration the people, and not just the governments,” said Ismail Mohamed, 42, a religious scholar who once was an imam in Germany.

Yes, the Muslim world is so respectful of other faiths. That's why Christianity is becoming extinct in the Middle East, and why Israel's neighbors want to wipe it off the map.

The article is a useful reminder that Muslims think they should be able to dictate the speech of people in other countries. They should pound sand -- in their own countries, where the supply is ample.

(so why can’t we demand that Muhammad be respected?)
Well very few people respect pedophiles!

Anyone got a tribal map of Libya they can post? This isn’t about movies, it’s about a country imploding. Can anyone even seriously call Libya a “country”?

Never any consideration for goats with these people.

Muslims are very peaceful - as long as an infidel you submit to sharia law and become a 3rd class citizen.

Until that time is reached - expect to be at a constant battle with muslims.

And the NYT and obama thinks if we can apologize enough and “understand muslims” this will ALL go away.

He just did. He demoted God-Incarnate Jesus to just a prophet. He seriously offended Christianity and should immediately apologize and ban Islam.

You just did Ali. Jesus isn’t a prophet. He is the Son of God, a part of the Trinity, and the only being in the universe who can (and would) save your soul.

If we ever get to where we DO understand Muslims, we will MAKE it go away.

I wonder if the NY Slimes took such a sympathetic narrative when reporting the outrage when a Crucifix was placed in a jar of urine or when elephant dung was thrown on a painting of The Virgin Mary and was called art? Were'nt we told that this was freedom of expression and those who disagree must respect the artists right to expression, despite our disagreement of it?

This is all a cover though - as every hour that goes by, it becomes more clear that these people hate us and this violence has nothing to do with this stupid movie.

The bottom line is that Islam as expressed in sharia law is 100% incompatible with the First Amendment and any sort of guaranteed civil liberty. On this one issue, there simply cannot be any compromise. If the berserk muzzies think that’s worth fighting over, on that one point we ought to be in agreement with them.

That’s a great idea. Rammed earth construction is very practical in hot, dry places. Maybe you could get a government grant to go over to the M.E., and teach the locals how to pound sand.

Rammed Earth or Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs) require clay as a binder, usually about 30%.

(Thus endeth my totally irrelevant but technically correct comment... Kinda reminds you of the lost Helicopter in Seattle joke...)

I get overly literal and technical all the time. (Well, not all the time ... just occasionally, to be literal about it.)

Oh, look a helicopter! Do you suppose the people inside know they’re in a helicopter?
