THE police are investigating an attempted break-in where the homeowner discharged his weapon.

Police have confirmed a 12-gauge shotgun was used to scare the two masked men away after they tried to break into a house at Lobau settlement in Nausori early yesterday morning.

However, director operations Senior Superintendent Rusiate Tudravu said he could not confirm at this stage whether or not shots fired hit one of the intruders because they had yet to receive a report to this effect.

"The home owner has been interviewed by the officers at Nausori Police Station and the gun has been taken in by the police to find out its licence and registration details," SSP Tudravu said.

He said no charges had been laid as investigations were continuing.

Meanwhile, home owner Liaket Ali, 48, said they were awoken when his wife heard noises.

He said it was around 1.30am, so he got up, loaded his gun and stood behind the door to see what was happening.

"Upon reaching the door, I saw two masked men trying to open the window to get inside the house," he said.

Mr Ali said the men were armed with an iron rod, a pinch bar, a hacksaw and a tin cutter.

in Fiji? Well they won’t have far to run. Two blasts from a 12 gauge is enough to scare any burglar. Hard to miss if Mr. Lia was actually trying.

Oh. And never bring a hacksaw to a gunfight.

"Oh. And never bring a hacksaw to a gunfight."

Or an iron rod, a pinch bar, or tin cutter.

You all missed the most important point:the police then disarmed the homeowner.
The gun was taken while they determine if its licensed.

"...and the gun has been taken in by the police to find out its licence and registration details."

There they go, treating the law-abiding citizen like a criminal.
