Crowd Attacks The US Ambassador In Beijing

Malcolm Moore, The Telegraph
Sep. 19, 2012, 6:19 AM

A crowd of around 50 Chinese protesters surrounded the official car of the United States ambassador in Beijing, who escaped unharmed, a State department spokesman said.

The melee occurred outside the gates of the US embassy on Tuesday and security guards had to intervene to protect Gary Locke, 62. The protesters caused minor damage to the vehicle, a statement from the embassy said.

"Embassy officials have registered their concern regarding today's incident with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and urged the Chinese Government to do everything possible to protect American facilities and personnel," the statement said.

The incident happened on Tuesday, while large crowds of protesters were massed outside the Japanese embassy nearby, to demand that Japan relinquish control of an island chain claimed by China in the waters between the two countries.

The statement gave no details about the demonstrators who blocked Mr Locke's car, or what angered them.

However the Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei tweeted a photograph of the protest on Tuesday afternoon, and said the crowd had chanted: "Down with US imperialism" and "Pay us back our money!" referring to the trillion dollars or so of US government debt that China holds.

Some Chinese observers have blamed the US for standing behind the Japanese on their claim, and suggested that the US is attempting to foment unrest in the region as a pretext for "pivoting" its naval forces back to the Pacific.

The incident came as the US Defence secretary, Leon Panetta, was meeting with senior Chinese leaders to reassure them that the US does not intend to "contain" China by building up a military presence in Asia.

People would do well to remember this is the PRC. The Chi-coms. Nothing happens on Embassy Row without the official blessing of The Party. We have recieved a none too subtle message.

"Some Chinese observers have blamed the US for standing behind the Japanese on their claim, and suggested that the US is attempting to foment unrest in the region as a pretext for "pivoting" its naval forces back to the Pacific."

A more likely reason is that the Japanese hold twice as much US debt as the ChiComs do.

It is long past time to reel in our investments in the PRC.

It was good. but it’s long past time.

The PRC is terribly biased, and we need to get out.

Don’t worry, the Chinese aren’t going to let this get out of hand. If I were one of those protesters, I would be concerned about my liver or kidneys. If they get hauled off to prison they may “wake up” metaphorically speaking without either, or both, lol !

You miss the point. The concern is not that it will get out of hand. the concern is Beijing ordered it to happen in the first place.

Tienanmen Square's protest was, as far as you understand it, a CCP-endorsed party then?

People who have obviously spent no time in China would do well to remember that the Chinese will hate the Japanese long after the communist dynasty is gone.

They're Chinese first, commies later. All the Party is doing is riding the wave. For the moment.

you do understand that Tienanmen Square and the front gates of the U.S. Embassy are not one and the same?

You do understand that the Gates of the Japanese Embassy and the US Embassy are not one and the same?

I understand that you are trying to make some omniscient observation about the great and omnipotent power of the CCP and somehow reduce all Chinese to mere party puppets.

That's in fact horsesh!t.

These people were protesting the Japs because they hate the Japs. They spilled over and found some American proxies to harass, most likely because as we've seen, American diplomatic security sucks right now.

If the Chicoms want to send a message they'll knock on the front door.

Get this straight: The CCP is only powerful as long as they can align their agenda to take advantage of the Chinese people's motivations.

The Chinese people are not and never have been puppets any more than an elephant or a bronco is a directly controlled puppet of its current rider.

Sam, I agree with you and I think it goes all the way back to the “Rape of Nanking” in the late 1930s. Maybe even further than that. They’ve never forgotten it.

If I were to ever truly “fear” any particular nation/race to rise, it’d be the Chinese.

The ones that have been & are outside China are “cashed up”, communist or not, would mostly still support China. (period/full stop).

They mostly like the freedoms, opportunity to make money elsewhere. Make no mistakes, they are hard working, persistent, great/tough traders/business people, expedient in their politics, diplomatic (when required), and don’t give a damn if they had to play dumb, deaf & blind. Life is cheap to them, even for their own race. They are in a word “persistent” as a race, individually.

The US should not allow itself to become further enslaved to China for $$$$$$$$$$$$$. The old saying is that those who pay you OWN you.

The Chinese people are not and never have been puppets any more than an elephant or a bronco is a directly controlled puppet of its current rider.

That's a very important point that seems to be completely lost on the majority of FR posters. They see China as some giant, monolithic factory where all of the little Borgs do everything they are told. In reality, as anyone who has been there realizes, it is a miracle the CCP maintains any control over China at all.
