Nobel prize-winning German author Günter Grass, declared persona non grata by Israel over a poem saying the country threatened world peace, has published another work, this time praising a man jailed for leaking Israeli nuclear secrets.

In one of a collection of 87 new pieces, Grass hails whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu, who served 18 years in prison for leaking Israeli nuclear secrets to a British newspaper, in a poem entitled "A Hero in Our Time". He describes former nuclear technician Vanunu as a "hero" and a "role model", according to extracts published by the German news agency DPA.

Earlier this year, Grass, 84, angered Israel after publishing a piece entitled "What Must Be Said", in which he voiced fears that a nuclear-armed Israel "could wipe out the Iranian people" with a "first strike." Israel has since barred him from visiting the country. …

Someone who leaks state secrets is not a “whistleblower”. Vanunu says that he is “pleased” by Grass’ tribute, which tells us what we need to know about him. And we all know about Grass the former SS officer, or at least we ought to. “A Hero In Our Time” sounds suspiciously like “Peace for our time” . . .

He has fond memories of fighting with his Panzer Division in 1945.

I always wondered what happened to Vanunu. They made a TV movie about him. The Mossad used a honey-trap agent to lure him to Italy where they grabbed him and took him back to Israel.

When I was younger, I used to give literary artists such as Grass and Harold Pinter a pass because I enjoyed some of their output. No more.

Though they can draft a pretty sentence, these types are in fact ugly statists who loathe self-determination and personal liberty.

They can rot in Hell with their Nobel Prizes.

Wasn't Günter once a Nazi?

Still is, apparently. He was in the Waffen SS.

Really shows his priorities. Vanunu is the lowest of the low.

That only came out a few years ago, after decades of sanctimoniously insisting that all those Germans who collaborated in any way with the Nazi regime should be outed and condemned, whilst keeping his own membership of the SS a secret for nearly 70 years...

Hitler is laughing in Hell. Incredible that one of his minions still lives & is causing mischief. Would be really neat if Herr Oberbahnsturmfuhrer Gunter Grass got offed by the descendant of an Auschwitz survivor.

It really would be neat.

And we all know about Grass the former SS officer...

Grass was a conscript, not an officer (17-years-old in 1944, rejected by the navy, drafted into the SS). POS he may be, officer material he never was. But feel free to embellish...

I stand corrected. But feel free to defend an open Nazi, by all means.

If that were to be by a Jew’s hand, the EU’s propaganda machine would have a field day with it.

Me ‘defend’ a Nazi? What are you smoking? A correction in fact is not a defense. And what part of my calling him a POS do you misunderstand?

Anyway, even worse than his spending a few months in the Waffen SS are the decades of sanctimonious hypocrisy that followed. Until the dirty little secret of ‘SS-Günni’ (as he has become known) came out he liked to be viewed as a moral conscience of post-WWII Germany. Like I said, POS.
