TV anchor Jennifer Livingston blasts viewer who attacked her weight

A local news anchor took the air Tuesday to blast a viewer who attacked her for being overweight.

Jennifer Livingston of WKBT in La Crosse, Wis., slammed the viewer on-air after he wrote in to complain that Livingston wasn't "a suitable example for this community's young people, girls in particular" because of her size.

"I was surprised indeed to witness that your physical condition hasn't improved for many years," the viewer wrote in the email titled "Community Responsibility."

"I leave you this note hoping that you'll reconsider your responsibility as a local public personality to present and promote a healthy lifestyle."

The letter quickly went viral after her husband, fellow WKBT anchor Mike Thompson posted it to his Facebook page Friday, telling followers that it made him "sick to his stomach."

“You can count MALE fat news anchors on one hand throughout television history”

Do you mean national news anchors? Because I know of 2 chunky local news anchors just in NC off the top of my head: Larry Stogner and Bruce Snyder.

The rarest of all is the sighting of an older female news anchor, age 55+. Old dudes are all over the evening news. Older women? Forget it. I guess they aren’t good role models for young girls. /s

Welcome to FR ...

Norma Holland...I have met her...totally full of herself, and overweight to boot.
I get the same impression from the blonde, Jennifer Johnson (albeit, she's not heavy), snooty and smarmy.

Didn’t one of them get in trouble for saying something about Tiger Woods? If it is who I am thinking of, yes she is pretty.

I have met her...totally arrogant. She never answers email by the way (I sent her an email once when she first came to the Rochester NY market and never so much acknowledged me). However, she goes on lecturns and talks about an email from a black teenager and how she has been mentoring her and so on...so she won’t answer my email, because I am a white male, but because it makes a better story, she paid attention to a black teen girl?

In contrast, I actually got emails back from Juliet Huddy and Megyn Kelly of Fox News. I was so happy I nearly framed them. Haha

They may been been on their air since they were young and thinner...my guess. Rarely do they hire NEW on the air male or female talent who are either fat or unattractive. I am sure they are put before focus groups and test marketed before they are even allowed on the air. I do agree female news anchors over age 50 are treated fairly. Heck, the national news people drove Jessica Savitch to drink and eventually kill herself...and she was relatively young and pretty.

Men are generally more visual then women when it comes to dating and mating. If you think what some men here say are rough, wait until you ladies go into a bar or a card game with just men and the dudes are just shooting the bull!

The lady needs to lose weight for health reasons but that is her problem. I can see that her viewers might comfort themselves by comparison of their overweight bodies with hers but neither she nor they should delude themselves into thinking that nobody notices. I see so many people terribly overweight and if children are with them they are generally overweight as well. The younger people can lose weight while their bodies will still more easily absorb the stretched skin that results from being fat. The older one gets before losing the weight, the more serious the problem becomes of dealing with all of the extra skin. Major surgery for those really obese, no longer young, people who have delayed the decision to trim down. Exercise and a healthy diet has to become a habit to replace the lack of both which results in poor health as well as surplus weight. Dietary self indulgence can be overcome with awareness of the problem and a desire to normalize ones weight.

I have the same amount of concern about whether a TV newswoman is packing a few extra pounds as I do about:...

So you have some sense AND class: what are you doing on THIS thread?

Go figure.
I rarely email any of them, but have had great response from Rachel Barnhart.
A true professional (and a babe).

Yes she is good and smart and a follower of the lost art of actually doing more than read the news, but looks at every angle of the news. She is actually a true journalist and not a news reader. She follows up on news stories and actually investigates. I admire her for that. And she is a cute redhead.

“Under Obamacare, it will be everyone’s business.”

I reject the “govt is paying so they can tell us what to do” argument the left uses. If thats the case they can tell people who have Obamaphones what they can say. The key point here is that if government doesn’t like paying for smokers or the obese THEY SHOULD GET OUT OF THE HEALTHCARE BUSINESS rather than restricting people’s freedom.

Larry has been on the air forever and has definitely gotten chunky over the years. Not sure about Bruce. He’s quite a bit younger.

But that leads to the other issue: age. It’s a shame that older women are so rare on the news. And comical, in a twisted sort of way. Guys can get old, fat, completely and utterly unattractive, and collect a nice paycheck for reading a teleprompter. Women get shuffled off the air on their 50th birthday. It’s so painfully obvious on so many channels.

But, back to the main issue, and this is not directed at you, so ignore if you wish.

The anchor *is* overweight. The letter writer in no way “bullied” her. He stated facts and gave her some unsolicited advice. Big whoop. However, her husband posted the letter on facebook and the can of worms was opened. “Bullying” is if the letter writer started a facebook page called “Jennifer Livingston is FAT” or, sending her weekly emails about her weight. Unsolicited advice about one’s appearance, stated once, is not bullying.

The only issue I have is the letter writer questioning her place as a role model. It’s not as if many young girls are watching the early am news. If they are watching, and they see a hefty newscaster, it’s not like any are going to pour themselves another bowl of Lucky Charms because of it. I believe he tossed in the role model comment to add a veneer of legitimacy and concern to an otherwise frivolous rant. If that’s the case, she should have simply written him back, called him out on it, and moved on. She didn’t, and here she is enjoying her 15 minutes of national recognition.

"Sounds like Michelle was here."

Well, no. Like I said before, if this news lady, or any person, wishes to be fat, thats their prerogative. The government has ZERO right to impose health standards on free citizens.

But as a free citizen myself (NOT the government or a representative thereof), its MY prerogative to condemn fatness if I wish to. While I don't give a damn if somebody wishes to drink a big gulp every day (and I do not consider it the governments business to regulate such activity), I'm not going to say its healthy to do so.

This anchor lady is fat. Obese. She's possibly (probably) unhealthy as a result, and clearly overly full (hehheh) of herself. As a free citizen, its my right to say so and to say I find fat women unappealing.

Unless an individual is proposing to repeal the first amendment (I'm not attempting to implying that you are, please don't take it that way), then the above statements are fact.

I agree completely. But if people want socialized medicine (or elect people who champion socialized medicine), then they should deal with the consequences. I used to be 60 pounds overweight. I lost it and I have kept it off. I put great effort into trying to live a healthy lifestyle. I frankly don’t want my taxes going up because someone else thinks that being obese is a civil right. If the healthcare is socialized, it’s my business if you abuse yourself. I’ll have to pay for it.

Oh is that bullying? Cry me a river.

She’s there to read the news, not to date. If your criteria for a newscaster is looking sexy, then yes Virginia, you are indeed shallow. Case closed.

Local news is sports, weather and murders. In the morning, I'm mostly there for the weather. I prefer a pretty weather gal to a frumpy weather gal. It's a pretty simple formula.
