Tough reviews for Jim Lehrer as debate moderator
San Francisco Chronicle (SFGate) ^ | 10/4/12 | David Bauder

NEW YORK — Jim Lehrer may be regretting his decision to come out of semi-retirement and moderate his 12th presidential debate.

The veteran PBS anchor drew caustic social media reviews for his performance on Wednesday, with critics saying he failed to keep control of the campaign's first direct exchange between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney. The candidates talked over Lehrer's attempts to keep them to time limitations, and his open-ended questions frequently lacked sharpness.

The tough assessments crossed party lines: Republican commentator Laura Ingraham wrote on Twitter that Lehrer seemed "a bit overwhelmed." Comic and Democratic activist Bill Maher bluntly tweeted that "Lehrer sucked."

When you go into a debate expecting the ref to be on your team you’re mad when the score’s lopsided. That’s liberalism.

How dare Lehrer allow Romney to expose Obama’s lies.

How about Lehrer's question on cost cutting vs. revenues... "Don't you call for a balanced approach, Mr. President"?

Lehrer later threw Obama the clue, "and you don't support that" after another point Romney made.

When Obama fails, someone must be blamed as it cannot be his fault.

UNDER THE BUS WITH YOU, JIM LEHRER!

The people around Obama who have shielded him from serious challenge for the last four years have done him a grave dis-service. Here he was in a Heavyweight Championship Bout, on live TV, when he gets punched hard for the very first time.

Too bad, Obamabots. Your guy has a glass jaw. Who knew... Sucks to be you...

Actuallly, Obama had 4 more minutes of speaking time than Romney did. It just seemed the other way around because of the level of the beating.

They are just upset that they did not have two fighters in the ring againstthe bated Romney. How much extra time did the ONE get? I k ow it was about 5 minutes in the debate. These shiny jerks are so used to having their thumbs on the scale that the can notnhandle it if someone forgets or ill not put their thumb on the scale.

It was one of the better moderated debates. (Imo) The moderator was not injected through out. Let the candidates debate so the voting public can get better information.

“Is there some law requiring it? “

You cannot let the sheeple find out there are alternatives. Total control.

Like I said before, Stephanie Cutter blamed Obama’s poor debate performance on Jim Lehrer. That is like blaming the Lincoln assassination on the lousy play being performed in Ford’s Theatre.

Borrowing for a tagline. That’s brilliant

This loss of control is bs. Lehrer plainly tried to come to Obama’s aid. He was suggesting answers to Obama when he realized he was floundering. He also was heard trying to interrupt Romney when Romney got on a roll.

It was outrageous he was saying “but Mr President, you believe in a more balanced approach.... “ when Romney started racking up points.

A would bet the next debate has a heavy handed moderator. Remember the dog bell in the past. It helps Obama. He can spin the facts in a short time. It takes longer to debunk.

One thing is certain and that is that Romney has an aggressive stand-in for Obama in debate practice. He also has an aggressive stand-in for the debate moderator since he is up against both of them.

It’s also very likely he will have stand-ins for the lame liberal town hall attendees he will face next time.

If there is another debate, and in my mind that is not certain, then the long knives will be out for Mitt... I think he is ready after what I saw last night.

He will attack the moderator aggressively next time IMO... because he will have to...this is something he has learned from Newt :-)

I’m glad the first and most important debate went so very well, the rest will mostly just have political junkies from both sides watching anyway.

After this humiliation Obama is going to do something very wicked very soon IMO. Lets hope the Romney super pacs are loaded for bear and ready. Lets also hope WW3 is not started as the ultimate diversion.

Nope other way around. CNN had a time monitor for each candidate. Obama got something like 5 minutes extra. Actual per CNN Obama 42:50 and Romney 38:32
