FISHERSVILLE, Va. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has described his disparaging remarks about the 47% of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes as "not elegantly stated." Now he's calling them "just completely wrong."

Romney had contended that nearly half of Americans consider themselves "victims" and are dependent on government.

The 53% have to pay their fair share can’t be far behind.

Right, I need the rest of the story. I do not trust the AP.

I hope there is a “rest of the story”.

Otherwise Romney has made a mistake.

I watched the whole speech Romney gave in VA today. It was only about 10-15 minutes and he didn’t mention anything about this.

I heard him say it live on Hannity. When Sean asked him I was thinking why are you bringing this up? When Romney answered I said why are you bringing this up?

Let the liberals whine about it not being said by Obama in the debate - now you just did their work for them.

Stupid Hannity

Hannity asked him about it and he explained that as President he will care about the 100%. What he said was totally fine and countered the Kenyan’s argument that Mitt only cares about the rich.

The AP story is designed to get conservatives all mad at Romney and to give liberals a big "he's flip flopping!" moment.

He just said that he'll be president of 100% of Americans and his comments were wrong.

If all 47% of non-fed tax paying citizens don't vote for him, as he predicted in his comments, he will lose the biggest landslide in the history of the republic. There are plenty of liberals with jobs who sure as hell ain't voting for him.

We better all hope his comments were wrong.

I thought those a-holes at Mother Jones admitted to editing out 2 minutes of the audio that made what he was saying about the 47% sound worse. If true, why not just explain that?

Romney on '47%': I was 'completely wrong'...all the talking heads are wondering why Obama didn't hit Romney with this in the debate last night - this is the reason - because Romney would have responded and put the issue to rest with a comment such as this - Obama and his henchmen specialize in hit and run attacks - drop the wildest lies and sleaziest accusations and then head for the hills before Romney can respond - Obama's too cowardly to bring the 47% tape up to Romney's face when he could actually defend himself on the spot.......

i guess the plan is to apologise and take the sting out of it ???

no choice i reckon, if he thinks he still has an uphill battle and needs some of those votes...

Good for Romney. Elitist class warfare is a loser and it’s wrong. True conservatism looks to Ronald Reagan, not Thurston Howell.

Mitt Romney is half right trying to back away a little from the comment. While what he was trying to say is correct, he said it in the wrong way by grouping moochers and those who should not have to be on welfare with the disabled, elderly, veterans etc...

Here is how Romney should explain.

Highlight that we can afford to have 20-27% of the country in the wagon with the rest of us pulling, but 47% is too much for everyone else to pull. We need the safety net for those Americans at rock bottom, but we need to motivate people and provide opportunities that challenge them to seek a better life. Our ticket believes in the dignity of a paycheck over a welfare check.
While his wording may have been poor, it was off the cuff, and in general terms, Americans agree that we cannot sustain almost 50% of the country of government welfare.
