I watched him as a kid and sang "put another candle on your birthday cake" with him many times.

Anyone remember Doye O'Dell?

Peacorn, popcan, chewin' nuts, gumdy -- that's the candy man's song.

Channel 5 in L.A, back when.

I usually “had lunch” with him on TV when I was 4 or 5. Remember DeMaggio carrots?

I remember Sheriff John quite well, and later on Hobo Kelly among others. But I don’t recall Doyle.

Rest in peace Sheriff John.

Thank you for being part of my childhood. You were part of a wonderful era that this Country sadly will never experience again.

His on screen persona matched his off screen life.

Are there any local stations that have their own children’s programming anymore? All I see are Disney, Nick and other syndicated programs.

We used to have several when I was growing up. In those days, they were good, clean fun and the kids could learn a lot of important things. Today, you don’t know what these programs are teaching your kids. They could be telling your kids that homosexuality is cool.

Rest in peace, Sheriff John. You gave me much joy as a child. You made so many children happy in simpler times. Hope you meet Engineer Bill (red light, green light for milk) in the ever after. You both were good souls who cared about our youth.

Just....damn. I was an official member of the Sheriff John Lunch Brigade. He, along with Engineer Bill, Captain Zoom and Tom Hatten, was a big part of my early years in So Cal. “...your another year old today.” Crusader Rabbit and Rags the Tiger.....

God Bless you, Sheriff, and thanks for all the good times.

And, yeah, I remember Doye Odell - there is a name I have not heard in a while. And how about Spade Cooley??

I don't remember him. Here are other children's shows that I remember.

Hobo Kelly, Romper Room, Captain Kangaroo, Tom Hattan (used to show Popeye cartoons), Wonderama (Bob McAllister), and Billy Barty.

I was on the Sheriff John show - lived in LA and my mom did whatever you had to do to get your little kid on the show. I did the Red-light Green-light milk drinking game with Engineer Bill.

RIP Sheriff.

OK, you guys. I’ll see you and up you one. I was ON Engineer Bill; the only part of ‘building a railroad car’ I did was put the wheels on, haha. Sheriff John was wonderful, too.

Those WERE the days. I grew up in Cleveland and we had similar people. Most of the kids walked home from school and mom had lunch waiting. We’d watch the shows for a 1/2 hour or so and walk back to school.

Captain Penny was a train engineer. Barnaby was an elf with pointy ears. Woodrow the Woodsman. Mr. Jingeling, the keeper of the keys for Santa Claus. Franz the Toymaker.

They showed cartoons and had interesting people on such as Jungle Larry who brought wild animals, birds, and alligators.

None of them pandered to the little kids. They treated them with respect and tried to build them up by encouraging good behavior. They were “squares.”

Just like Romney who is ‘unlikeable’ because he is a “square,” too. Those old-fashioned values just don’t cut it with today’s cool people.

Now they have those rapid-fire, high energy, flashy shows with some super-slick adults, or worse, super-hip kids as hosts with the latest music pounding in the background. Each segment lasts about 30 seconds.

And they have shallow guests like some druggie movie star, singer, or some pandering politician like that barack obama guy.
