I remember Sheriff John very well. I went to see him when he made an appearance at a shopping center probably around 1964. RIP.

Just like Romney who is ‘unlikeable’ because he is a “square,” too. Those old-fashioned values just don’t cut it with today’s cool people.

Perhaps it will one day be "hip to be square" again?

(Couldn't find any record of political donations by Hugh Anthony Cregg III aka Huey Lewis, so I don't know who he supports.)

I remember Tom Hatten. Didn't he wear a navy dixie cup for his Popeye theme? Do you remember Lloyd Thaxton dance show in Los Angeles? Remember Soupy Sales with White Fang?

Trivia question: Why did Soupy Sales get cancelled? It was a scandal. If you get it, you win an all expense paid vacation to fabulous Puerto Vallarta (recognize that prize?)...har!

Interesting that I can remember those people and shows, but don't have a clue as to what I did months ago.

"Anyone remember Doye O'Dell?"

I recognize the name but don't recall what he did.

Remember Bill Balance on LA radio when transistor radios first came out?

"How about Hobo Kelley?"

Remember the name but not the show. Didn't he have a clown makeup face with some kind of hat? I didn't like clowns as a kid and never watched Bozo the Clown for that reason.

Give me the Lone Ranger with the William Tell overture! Exciting even as a child. The hero that was the Ranger along with the music, installed some kind of goodness in my soul (even being from the original broken family). I have tried to emulate such through life - although not always on cue. I can still here the music as I write this.

Yeah, Tom Hatten played Popeye cartoons, had a big easel and would turn random squiggles into cartoons. And who can forget Lloyd Thaxton and “King of the One Inch Ties” (remember those??)

And I LOVED Soupy Sales.....White Fang, Black Tooth and Pookie (not to be confused withe Pookie’s Tunes...). Ol’ Soup got in trouble several times. The one I remember most was for asking kids to find their parents’ wallets and send him any pieces of paper with pictures of presidents on them. And you never knew who was going to show up at his door. It was really great fun.

Hobo Kelly was played by a lady named Sally Baker.

Along with millions of Southlanders, I grew up with Sheriff John. I have a 78 rpm recording of his song The Birthday Cake Polka (1953), which was one of the first songs I learned to sing.

Am I the only SoCal 1950’s young ‘un who remembers Skipper Frank?

No, you're not. I regularly watched Skipper Frank and Tom Hatten on KTLA on weekdays. In 1960, I saw Skipper Frank in person when he made an appearance at a shopping center. The Skipper left us in 2000.

How about Hobo Kelley?

Yup... Back in the days when the only channels were 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13. And they went off the air and turned off the transmitters at the end of the day.

Sheriff John, Captain Kangaroo, Engineer Bill, Skipper Frank, Chucko and Bozo the Clowns—my gosh, my childhood is really gone now...

I watched all of these shows. Another that I liked was Beachcomber Bill, who had a show during the summer of 1963. I recall how he would lip-synch popular songs of the day such as Green, Green by the New Christy Minstrels, Camp Granada by Allen Sherman, and Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport--songs that would appeal to kids. I think his show lasted only a couple months.

Yep...and Engineer Bill ("Red light, Green light"), Kukla Fran and Ollie also.

Additionaly, as a young kid, Mom took me to a 'personal appearance' of Buffalo Bob and Howdy Doody at the Alex Theater in Glendale....and my ticket stub got called to come up front onstage to receive my prize (a blowup beach-ball); I was mortified, but Mom prodded me to do my thing.

KCOP was the third-tier local L.A. station from which Keith Olbermann got fired as the sports guy......why??...for being the same prima donna prick that he remains as today.

Stu Nahan (L.A. sportscaster, and favorite target of Jim Healy) also had an early show where he was “Skipper Stu”.
