For Barack Obama's Believers, It's All Been Downhill Since The Inauguration President Obama's 2008 cheerleaders admit job woes, student debts and fury at Wall Street have sapped their optimism

Aditya Chakrabortty 7 October 2012

Call them the believers. The three people who gathered at a Pittsburgh cafe on a sunny morning last month weren't merely supporters of Barack Obama back in 2008 – they were investors in him, full of hope for what his presidency might deliver.

Iraqi war veteran Helen Gerhardt got to meet the then-candidate, and bend his ear about the Middle East. Her election day was spent driving African-Americans to polling stations: "We had the music up, and we were partying all the way there. It was one of the biggest highs of my life."

Rosemary Trump and Dan Beeton went to the presidential inauguration in January 2009. They make it sound like a cross between an outdoor rock concert and a particularly weepy wedding: 1.8 million strangers tearfully hugging each other on the Mall. Trump petitioned her congressman for tickets; trekked to her sister's place in Maryland; stayed out late at a ball the night before; got up at 4am to schlep into Washington; legged over security barriers to get nearer the action and remained on her feet till 7pm. Trump is 64.

Beeton remembers peering at a giant screen showing Bush and Cheney: "I thought: 'At last, they're gone!'" Trump bursts into Happy Days Are Here Again and asks: "How would you ever duplicate that moment?"

Ask how enthusiastic they feel this time and the responses are far more muted. Former Democrat campaigner Gerhardt is furious: "I can't tell you how betrayed I feel. The people on Wall Street who have wrecked our economy have been let off the hook, ......

It appears that Barry’s gold diggers were expecting a lot more from their sugar daddy than they got. If he’s reelected, they are really going to be in for a shock. No matter what happens in November, the party is over. America is broke.

The Brits always provide far better election coverage than the rags over here.

Would love to see an article such as this featured prominently in the NY Times or WaPo.

Finishing a postgraduate degree, she left the University of Pittsburgh last summer loaded down with student debt and unable to land anything more than a part-time job. For much of this year, she slept in her car. A badly dented Chevy parked around the corner from work served as her address until just over a month ago, when family took over the loans and a friend put her up in an attic.

OBAMAPHONE!!!!!!!

I have friends who still believe in him. One has been out of work throughout Obama’s presidency. Ask her about that and she will blame George Bush. Another worked on Obama’s campaign and inauguration last time around. She is campaigning for him again this year and has already announced she will be at his inauguration again next January. Both are college grads. The unemployed one has a masters.

University education hasn't helped these two. If Obama told them to jump off a cliff, they would do so. They are true believers with a cult-like devotion to him. I've tried numerous times to get them to see the light, but they are unmoved. There is just no reasoning with people like that.

The fact that many people can see that Obama has been a miserable failure and still want to vote for him proves that we’ve turned the corner as far as having more stupid people than smart people. Honest to God, if these morons can’t see why Obama is so terrible, this country is lost.

Its all been downhill for many who are not and never were "believers", as well.

The consensus seems to be that Obama hasn’t been “progressive” enough. Idiots.

To: When do we get liberated?

Narrator: As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species.

Yeah, that`s what I gathered from it too. They`d vote for a Pol Pot clone if he promised to kill all Wall Streeters, nationalize every business and hand these idiots a bike, apartment, EBT card, rationed health care, a free cell phone and a kitten.

Exactly so. No matter how much failure and sorrow leftism produces, the left always blames it on someone else. If ever there were a clear case of a failure of Keynesian economics, the last four years has been it. All the left can say is "We did not go far enough left!"

Don’t hold your breath on that! They are just as “obotic” as the Obozo worshipers described here. Same goes for MSNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN.

I agree that the Brits are doing us a better job of covering the election in this country than the Obama Stooge media in this country. Thanks to the Internet, we can get better information than what we get from the so-called “mainstream” media.

We are not seeing “Keynesian” economics. Keynes never proposed chronic deficits and unbalanced budgets. What passes for Keynesian ideas around here is about as far from what Keynes actually believed and wrote as one can get.

I would bet that not one in a thousand who remarks on Keynes has ever read his major work, The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money. While certainly there are mistakes in his analysis and Milton Friedman does a good job of exposing them, Keynes would not recognize his theories as claimed to exist.
