I don’t recall all that many dark elements except for Judd Fry.

I love Shirley Jones in that movie. I think she is just perfect a Laurey, and Laurey has to be perfect.
I directed a production of the stage show many years ago. One of my favorite moments was when an actor picked up the fake knife that Curly uses to accidentally kill Jud and, as he walked off stage, abesnt-mindedly pushed the blade back and forth into the hilt. Fortunately, it was only a rehearsal.
