Mitt Romney was riding a surge in US presidential opinion polls sowing panic through the Democratic ranks by overtaking Barack Obama in several surveys a month before Election Day.
The Republican challenger, who had trailed Mr Obama for months, won sharp swings in support thanks to his victory last week in the contest's first televised debate, according to three nationwide polls.
He led the President by four percentage points nationwide, according to Pew, a non-partisan organisation, which had Mr Obama leading by eight points in mid-September. PPP, a Left-leaning pollster, found the Republican's national lead was three points, while Gallup put it at two points.
Rasmussen, a Right-leaning group, said Mr Romney also led by two points across the 11 battleground states likely to decide the election, having overtaken Mr Obama for the first time in three weeks.
Aides to Mr Romney said swing voters were giving him "another look" after months of attacks from Mr Obama. "Governor Romney offered voters a choice between someone with a plan to turn our economy around and a President who is offering four more years of the last four years," said a spokesman.

And that's a best case scenario.
It would be interesting to know if this coincides with Romney unleashing a tsunami of ads starting about a week or so ago. Obviously ideas matter in politics. But without money for ads, no one will hear of your ideas. IMO, McCain might have won in 2008 if he had not been outspent 3 to 1. His idiotic pledge to limit himself to Federal matching funds killed his chances of winning.

The dems are furiously trying to find something, anything to get Romney on. Anything will do. The Big Bird flap failed. The dog on car roof thing won’t convince too many people. No one will believe sexual allegations. Their last resort will be to “find” someone who is willing to claim that Romney is racist, in return for several thousand dollars.
If Romney's counting on Freepers to win, he's already lost. We're a tiny fringe of the GOP - 1/4 of 0.1% of web traffic, according to Alexa.com.

It captures the whole enchilada - supports conservative candidates up and down the ticket without mentioning a single one of them.
That's the wrong metric. What's our percentage of traffic for political discussion sites? Still not huge, perhaps, but important enough that Mr. Romney would not dismiss us out of hand.
I don't think it's a bad metric, because most people don't look at political discussion sites. I can tell you for a fact that I am the only person I know - left, right or center - who visits them. It's fringe phenom. Whatever the ideology, (Freeper, DU-er, et al) we're basically political enthusiasts, much as there are NASCAR enthusiasts or gaming enthusiasts.
Yes, we are the fringe; we are the online equivalent of likely voters. That's what I was getting at.
