More than 1,000 New Jersey gas stations are unable to sell fuel due to power outages and delivery problems, according to the head of one of the state's gas station associations.
Sal Risalvato, executive director of the New Jersey Gasoline-Convenience-Automotive Association, which represents 1,500 stations, told us by phone that 75 percent of his members have shut down fueling.
"There's difficulty getting supply from the pipeline, to distribution centers, to the trucks, to the gas stations, and then the final hurdle, getting it into car. So there [are] difficulties along every point."
Many stations don't have power to pump gas. Those with power are pumping fuel until they run out. Although some refineries remain shut down, they still have fuel in storage. But trucks are having trouble making it to the stations because roads remain blocked by trees and flooding.
Additionally, there are more cars on the road since many bus and train lines remain suspended.
Risalvato said none of his clients are gouging.
"There's nobody rationing, when a retailer has gas, pumping until has no more."
Two separate people we talked to today, who otherwise have power, said that gasoline was their main concern, in part because it's fueling generators.

If you are really desperate, an icepick to the bottom of the tank works as well. Keep a supply of sheet metal screws with neoprene washers for use as shut off valves...
The Marines used to hook a hose to the exhaust and bury the end under gravel. With not all that much gravel or dirt it’d be pretty quiet.

Of course an alternative is to use a power inverter hooked up to your car. Not as fuel efficient of course, but it works as a short-term power need. It’s also a lot less noisy than most stand alone generators and attracts less attention.
Also, if you’re going to run any sensitive electronics or medical equipment from your inverter or stand-alone generator you should seriously consider a pure sine wave model.

If it were me I’d sell the gas gennie asap when you get power back. invest in a diesel powered one or a multifuel one and store as much diesel in a tank as my township would bear and/or I could hide in a shed in the back yard. Diesel stores MUCH better than gas...

This happens every year, year in and year out, down south and folks manage to get gas, get stuff and get on with it.
Just remember that in New Jersey state OSHA requires that you place a "No Open Flames" sign (6" X 12" minimum) in front of your work area and with approved hazard colors. /sarc

I have a 7000 watt unit that powers up the whole house. But it’s beyond noisy.
After much research, I’m getting a “deck” storage box from HD. Cover the inside walls with insulation and make a hole for the exhaust. I also want to put a small car muffler on it. I’ve seen the before and after and I’m impressed with the noise difference.
Also, if there’s anyone that’s want’s to sell gas in NJ then I’m a buyer. I run a business in Newark that I need to check up on every day even with no power (It’s located near the projects). I live in Rahway. It’s getting hard out here.

A couple days out and they're out of food. Such things boogles the mind. I read about one guy hollering at FEMA or whatever agency on day two (TWO!!!) about getting food to the starving hoards. Do people not have a can of soup in the cabinet? No Ramen noodles and a lit scented candle? Not even a box of crackers? Did they not expect trick or treaters so they don't even have a few bags of Halloween candy? They obviously don't live entirely off fast food or there wouldn't be groceries. So, what the heck do they buy at the grocery stores if they have zero food in their homes? Rover and Kitty must be getting nervous around the Donners.
My well is 220’ deep. The water is down 200’. I do not think a hand pump would work. That is why I have a Honda gasoline backup generator.
Having a generator and just one or two 5-gallon containers is like having an AR15 and 10 rounds of ammo. You need 15
5-gallon containers and you need to fill them well before the weather event arrives.
