“Why do people expect FEMA right away?”
In the Hollywood movies, FEMA (Always the government heros) already has tent cities set up within hours of a disaster, and saves the day.
People expect it to be like it is in the movies.
No...that would be so if you said “blackie”.
funny and weird how the media are not asking liek they did after Katrina where are the FEMA trailers?
Where is the President?
Why is he out in other states campaigning?
Where are the gasoline trucks?
Where are the generators?
COME ON MEDIA WHY NOT ASK WHERE THE GAS, TRAILERS AND FOOD, AND GENERATORS?
Please note that I offer the image of what was once Staten Island home without calling you a smug self righteous a$$. May you encounter folk like yourself in the hour of your need.
In 2004-2005 when 8 storms hit Florida, everybody there realized the Government wasn’t comming. And when they get there they will have the wrong things (ice for refridgerators on the 5th day, or MRE’s after 7 days). I feel for those New Yorker’s. Been in their shoes. It’s a shock when it finally sinks in about the sorry state of Government, and how they can’t be counted on. But a lesson they will keep for the rest of their lives.
The very name “Federal EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT agency” implies they exist for the purpose of providing emergency aid, not help filling out forms for rebuilding.
FEMA needs to be disbanded or rebranded to Federal Rebuilding Agency, and emergency response left to the Nat’l Guard, where it should be.
These multi-layered federal agencies exist solely to provide cushy jobs for federal employees.
And how about going back to our founding principles? Where are the local militias? Militia being every able bodied male between 18 and 45. There is a HUGE relief force sitting on their hands waiting for “someone” to come fix things. I keep seeing thousands of healthy adults “waiting for hours in line” to buy gas. Why aren’t these people out working the cleanup? That is right, they expect someone else to do all the work.
Where is all this community spirit we are always told about concerning the big cities?
obama hates white people?
I’ve never seen these movies.
In our area we actually do have a FEMA trailer park.
It didn’t happen right away, and it almost didn’t happen at all.
First there would stories the trailers were coming. Then there stories they were not “winter proof” - they didn’t meet some regulation regarding colder northern climates.
Someone somewhere decided they were better than nothing at all - they came in, maybe 2 months after the disaster.
hey a$$hole, even those who went to shelters lost EVERYTHING in their homes and have nothing to come home to
you smug jackass
In our tiny town, the local football team provided the muscle to dig mud out of flooded homes.
A variety of groups showed up in that first month...groups you never hear of unless you’re in the middle of one of these scenarios.
Mostly volunteer/church/community based groups of young folks who swoop in for a period of time.
I remember some colleges sending groups of students in.
The “emergency management” part of FEMA? As I have seen it....is the longer term.
First you have immmediate needs - FEMA doesn’t do much there.
FEMA is where our homeowners, business owners, and a few schools have been dealing with in trying to rebuild.
One school? It will probably be 3 years from the disaster before the kids can return to the original site.
I agree with your assessment of the organizations that are, generally, the first with ‘boots on the ground’ during times of emergency. FEMA is not an immediate response agency - it takes a lot of effort to get a behemoth mass in motion (think of it as trying to push an 18 wheeler down a road as opposed to a chevette). The relief agencies that have volunteers living in and around affected areas are the ones that provide the day to day necessities in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
However, that is NOT what we have been programmed by the media and the liberal talking points to expect since Katrina. The talking points, from the libs, has always been that FEMA failed in the wake of Katrina and did not provide the emergency relief supplies and rescues that were necessary. You and I know this to be BS, but, that is what people have become accustomed to hearing: FEMA shows up with a huge blank check an hour after a disaster and boom - you’ve got instant hot meals, water, all utilities are turned back on with the flip of a switch, and everyone gets prepaid Visa cards to go shopping with and the expectation of ‘their share’ of handouts. That is what the libs want FEMA to be, it is not, but they have programmed the lesser intelligent among us to expect it.
If the samne percentage of NY area folks pitched in to help as your community did, recovery would already be well underway.
When Hugo hit NC, many locals cleared the roads, they didn’t wait for outsiders to do the work. I know first hand as I ran a chainsaw for 3 days straight.
You would be surprised how fast the power crews can work if the roads are clear when the get there.
What good are blankets and food when seven feet of salt water sweeps through your house just before it burns to the ground?
yes - the utility workers were on it 24/7 here. They really did do a great job.
The national guard got here very quickly too and helped with the roads and delivering MREs, water, blankets, etc...
Were the people in Staten Island told to evacuate for their own safety? It looks like they were in a very vulnerable position.
We have to remember that some people had the means to prepare and did not, but.....there are a lot of people that did not have the means to prepare. There are retired people living on a fixed budget and many people that are unemployed due to Mr Resident!!!! Times are hard EVERYWHERE, and I just want to remind people that we need to keep in mind those people who truly do need help, and do not have any family. We can not lump everybody together. I feel very bad for those who are broke....the elderly.....the widowed....the ones who have lost everything they had in one night.....the ones who have died. Jesus treats us as individuals. Let us pray for those who feel they have no hope.
Yes...last night hubby and I took in Brian Williams show.
He gave the old obligatory Katrina bashing - as compared to wonderfully Christie and O were doing.
And I’m thinking....how is this any different?
They just aired footage of desperate, suffering people who appeared to be bewildered at the lack of help.
At least with Katrina, by day 4 - the people were receiving food and water.
Exactly. No bail out for them!
I don’t know. It seems unimaginable that would not have been told.
One woman was saying they still need to get in homes filled with sand to dig for bodies.
[Where is FEMA?]
Black population New Orleans...67.25
Black population New Jersey...13.6%
Enough said?
