Rampage Shootings: It's the Moral Decay of Society, not Guns

It should come as no surprise that the rate of mass shootings at schools and in other public places is increasing. The surge has nothing to do with guns, which have been widely available in the U.S. for years. Gun control laws have been increasing. Instead, there is a direct correlation between the increase in violence and the gradual degradation of morals, ethics and parenting. We are cultivating mental illness in our society.

Parents are allowing television and video games to increasingly babysit their children, even though both have become full of gratuitous violence. A New York Times study of rampage killers found that six of them were into violent video games. Research shows that violent video games and television desensitize people and promote aggressive behavior, despite claims to the contrary. A research scientist at the University of Michigan found that television was responsible for 10% of youth violence. Parents today are neglecting their children, and when things don't go well, rushing to get divorced instead of trying to work things out first. Children suffer emotionally when their parents fight or split up. Parents are ignoring their children so much they don't even see the warning signs that something might be wrong. The New York Times study found that 63 of 100 rampage killers had made threats of violence before the event.

Parents are no longer taking their children to church, where they would learn stability and morals. Fewer than 20% of Americans now regularly attend church. Every year there are 3000 fewer churches across the U.S, even though the population is growing. God and morality have been taken out of the public schools and replaced with political correctness and non-judgmentalism. “Public virtues” are no longer taught in today's schools. People who do not attend church are more likely than churchgoers to have stress and to be less optimistic about the future. When parents split up and there is no father to take the children regularly to church, the children are much less likely to become regular churchgoers than if their mother regularly takes them.

The New York Times study found that at least half the killers in 100 rampage attacks showed signs of serious mental health problems. 48 killers were formally diagnosed with mental illness, often schizophrenia. The mentally ill used to be kept in hospitals, where they were not a danger to others. Beginning in the 1950s in California, the ACLU successfully filed lawsuits to take the mentally ill out of hospitals, known as “deinstitutionalization.” By the 1980s, most state-run mental health hospitals had closed.

Now, most of the mentally ill are out on the streets or in prison. The laws have been changed to state that the mentally ill cannot be hospitalized until they've already attacked someone. As a result, more mentally ill people are incarcerated than in hospitals, with the seriously mentally ill three times more likely to end up behind bars than hospitalized. More than half of all people in prison report that they have mental health problems, and more than 40 percent of the seriously mentally ill have been in jail or prison. A study at the University of South Florida found that the highest users of criminal justice and mental health services were 97 people who had been arrested 2,200 times. It is ludicrous that those 97 people are not contained for their safety and others in mental health hospitals.

The 22-year old Oregon shopping mall gunman who killed two people earlier this week is sadly typical of the rampage murderers the decay of society has spawned. He had this written on his Facebook page, "I'm the conductor of my choo choo train. I may be young but I have lived one crazy life so far." One of his friends said he raised himself; his mother died at childbirth, he never met his father, and he left his aunt's home at age 14.

The left will use the high level of emotion stirred up by this past week's two rampage killings to push through new gun control laws. Liberal New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called upon President Obama to enact tougher gun control laws immediately after Friday's mass shooting at an elementary school in Connecticut. Yet demanding more gun control laws will not solve anything. Gun control advocates have already increased the number of laws around the country requiring background checks, waiting periods for purchases, and tracking of firearms. Many of the rampage killers obtained guns illegally. If they can't obtain guns, deranged individuals will find other ways to commit mass murders – by setting fires, making bombs or running people over with vehicles. One day after the shootings in Connecticut, a man in Beijing stabbed 22 primary school students with a knife.

The left should not be allowed to dominate the dialogue after these tragic events with a red herring argument for gun control, in order to sneakily distract Americans from blaming them for what they have wrought. Americans who believe in traditional values must speak up and denounce the degradation of society's morals as the root of the problem behind these rampages, or the tragedies will continue to escalate.

You raise a very good point, but you miss another one completely. In a different day and age, a mutant like that would never have been allowed to walk freely in society in the first place. People like him were the reason prison colonies were created, and why freaks were banished from a society as soon as they gave the first obvious signs that they were simply unfit to live among decent, law-abiding people.

One of the things nobody in law enforcement likes to admit openly is that there is absolutely nothing that anyone can do to deter a mutant who is hell-bent on mayhem and destruction and has every intention of dying in the process. The fear of hell used to deter some of these people who may have had a semblance of rational thought left in them, but we've legislated and medicated hell out of existence in this modern world. Incidents like this show that a fearful price is to be paid when we do this.

Nobody in the media wants to take a deep look into how psychoactive drugs can change the personalizes of some individuals.

I’ve seen first hand how it can totally change the demeanor and behavior of the person taking them, and the next day the person doesn’t remember a thing.

Yes, because:

Liberal Media = 1) free drugs as a substitute for parenting and 2)confiscation of guns from citizens

They’ll never let a liberal issue such as medicating children get in the way of their gun control agenda.

A criminal psychologist on Fox just called for identifying the dangerous psychotics before they explode. He says the ability does exist.

Would that our leaders listen. But, we know that message interferes with their ambitions and plans to seize more and more power over We The People.

One more point for proper context - it is the very moral decay of our society that has led to an explosive increase in the demand for psychotropic prescription drugs by parents for their children. Not in every case, but where the casual knee-jerk decision to prescribe drugs by parents who rather not deal with other underlying societal, moral and cultural factors that their kids are being exposed to.

It should come as no surprise that the rate of mass shootings at schools and in other public places is increasing.

I saw a graphic today on an MSM channel that said that 2012 was the worst year ever for mass shootings. By liberal / MSM logic, since 0bama is President, he is responsible for these mass shootings ("it's all 0bama's fault").

Mr. President - when will you take responsibility for these shootings?

Maybe if democrats and other liberals stop preaching hate, punching out conservatives and threatening “there will be blood” against anyone who doesn’t agree with them........

"Kick God out of schools, and Satan moves in."

And.. Kick Presidents out of the White House, and a Godless celebrity moves in.

These shootings have reached a fever pitch since the GODLESS, LYING, CHEATING, CORRUPT regime took over.

“4 If you know your child has issues why do you have guns in the house?”

More than anything else, I think this will come into perspective as the critical element that provided Adam Lanza the spark to change from what he was in high school (a shy kid with Asperger’s syndrome) into a mass killer.

At age 20, he could not buy a handgun in Connecticut (not sure about the Bushmaster, but the answer is probably no for that, as well). Yet his mother had all these weapons available at home. We may never know her reasons, she isn’t here to explain herself any longer. Perhaps the ex-husband and brother will help with clarifying her reasons to own them.

There’s a good piece up on Drudge’s page that describes Adam in high school — awkward, shy, perhaps “developmentally disabled” but clearly not [completely] autistic. Probably nothing that would indicate future violent behavior. Not “normal”, per se, but not a nihilistic killer.

Something happened in the two years since he graduated. Pure speculation on my part, but I’ll guess that he didn’t try (or wasn’t able) to get a job after high school, and because of his disability, withdrew more into himself, perhaps into violent computer games and certain types of music that tends toward the dark and violent (I read that he was into something called “goth” music). Others have said that schizophrenia can begin to emerge in young men his age.

I can see a combination of various factors “pulling him downward” in the space between high school and yesterday. But again, without the close availability of his mother’s weapons, he and those he killed would be alive today. Would you keep your weapons within easy reach of an unstable family member? Or take appropriate action to secure them?

Did she not see him “slipping”? Guess we’ll never know.

"Parents are allowing television and video games to increasingly babysit their children, even though both have become full of gratuitous violence."

Haven't read posts on this thread so it may already be covered.

I understand that some video games that are particularly violent are used for training military.

If used for military training, what is it doing for, and to, kids?

“..On and on...every aspect of humanity, culture and society has been tuned upsidedown...”
That was a highly insightful and a very well-put post, but I’d go further and state that society has been turned into evil. When you not only kick God out of every aspect of society, but in turn, shake your fist in His face, He obliges the free will choice of that society. He never forces Himself on anyone. He never changes. He did the same with a back-slid Israel over and over again in the Old Testament. He simply removed Himself and allowed their evil and their enemies to swallow them up. For America too, it’s especially bad because this nation was founded on His principles and concepts. Worshiped Him for who HE is. He had a guiding hand in it’s development because our founders welcomed Him into their presence and sought His guiding hand every step of the way (contrary to modern historian revisionism, another communist lie). America has known Him for a long, long time. Now, society despises His presence and everything related to Him; and He has quietly removed Himself. Without Him, that void is filled by the evil nature of man stoked up by Satan himself. This is a spiritual battle just as much as it is anything else.
The solution: II Chronicles 7:14
Will it happen? Can it happen? It’s our choice as a nation.

***And then maybe Hollywood control.***

After the murder of Bobby Kennedy, the blame was laid on violent tv shows, comic books, pulp magaziines and movies.

Comic books changed their story lines. TV shows dumbed down to kiddie shows, pulp magazines toned down their covers, but them MOVIE INDUSTRY said they would police themselves.

A rating system would work! G M R X! Yes! That would do it!

HOT DA*N the HAYS code is dead! Produce’m boys!

The result was the most vile sex and blood films ever to come out of Hollywood. Produce an R rated movie for adults, market it to pre-teens! That was the way!

"I remember reading one book looking at what school shootings had in common. The three main things were age and gender of the gunmen (between 16-24), History of mental illness (generally schizophrenia and suicidal depression), focus on violence as proof of manhood."

Don't know where I heard/read this but I understand that males around 20 years old present schizophrenia, if they are going to present schizophrenia.

Something about young men in late teens/early 20's goes terribly wrong.

This horror, visited with evil, and a lot of other reasons, may take a long, long time to understand.

Maybe never but we have to try.

Guns themselves are not the problem. It takes someone to pull the triggers.

Why....
