Cities Banning Trucks and New Truck Stops
Truckers Report ^ | 12/21/12 | Samuel Barradas

Posted on 12/21/2012 6:53:42 PM PST by Domandred

Despite pumping life into every town and city that they haul freight to, truckers are still looked upon as a nuisance by most areas. They think of big trucks as rolling death-machines that bring pollution, noise, and crime to their towns, not realizing that what they really bring is absolutely everything the town needs to survive. Well, yet another city is taking steps to ban these “nuisances” from their streets entirely.

The mayor of Columbiana, Alabama has called for a ban on semi-trucks driving in their downtown area. He says that trucks are the main cause of traffic jams in his city and that truckers often drive over curbs. He was quoted as saying “I really feel like we are doing the city a disservice by allowing these large trucks” to drive in the area.

It seems that it’s not just one man’s misguided quest to turn truckers into a scapegoat, the city council has cast their lot in with the mayor as well. “I think it’s unanimous that everyone agrees if we can keep [truckers] out of the downtown area, we should do it,” the mayor said.

Towns across the country trying to keep trucks of their main streets cause annoying, time wasting, and sometimes dangerous detours, but even more worrying is that towns are now trying to keep truck stops from opening their doors anywhere in the town limits.

I see big rigs all around big box stores and grocery stores in my city. They don’t bother me. I like the goods they truck in for consumers.

Since Dodge is the only “domestic” vendor offering TD’s with manual transmissions, I’ve got one lined up as my last new vehicle (I’m older than dirt).

They don’t bother me either; I like big iron and some of the stuff they bring in also. All of which has nothing to do with the comment I posted.

Still, it can be a bit intimidating, if I’m driving in the middle lane and I’ve got two semis on either side driving at the same speed I am, and I can’t go faster. :)

Try it on a motorcycle :). Seriously, I've been there. It's like having your own personal little canyon to ride in. I worry some about "gator tail".

Yup, I put 348,000mi on my 1996 Dodge Cumins and then 2 years ago found a 2006 with very low mileage, 32,258mi. I bought it for $30,000 and it was loaded with everything by the previous owner. I’ll be 90yo if I drive this one as along as I drove the 1996. Check out CARMAX for a PU.

Maybe I did not understand your comment. You did say:”But no denying there are idiot liberals in some places who hate trucks and can not comprehend the consequences if trucks were banned throughout the whole county or country.”

I don’t doubt that they will ban them too. And then whine when everything goes up in price (even faster than it is now!).

We actually tested for that situation using a radar/vision ID system. At least no advanced vehicle will crash into you from behind. ;-)

You can drive slower. Seriously, have you ever seen the force of a truck tire blowout? I don’t drive next to them unless passing.

Hey Walmart, the '70s called. They want their cab-overs.

The good thing about driving a cab-over is if you're involved in an accident you're the first one on the scene.

I can imagine that some cities might reasonably want to restrict long rigs in parts of the city

That is generally true but usually trucks are allowed to make deliveries in the in No Truck areas, not just drive through.

This could be an opportunity for a distribution company with step vans and bobtails.

Prosperity and success are the twin evils of modern times.

They are being extinguished.

Downtown Columbiana is like one street about 1/4 mile long.

The trucks must stop on the street to make deliveries...this usually happens because the gubmint doesn’t have the funds to maintain the alley behind the stores....eventually they become impassable.

This main street looks to be at least a hundred years old...might have even had a dirt street and wood sidewalks at one point. That entire century trucks and wagons have been making deliveries to these stores...but all of the sudden nobody can figure out how to do it? If I see a truck parked in the street, I wait for the opportunity and just drive around it....wow.

Too many idiots are getting elected to office all over the Nation at every level of public service. This means of course that too many idiots are running for office, which in turn means public service is no longer envisioned as an esprit de corps so to speak, thus draws less than quality candidates for the constituency to rationalize.

Yeppers , I have me one of those and it took me 2 hours to find a place to park in Memphis ... the Police Dept let me use their Parking lot for 1 Hour ... ended up getting a Handicap placard and parking in front of the Hotel (Truck wouldn’t fit in the Parking Garage)

Needless to say I walked for the entire week I was there
