The entirety of Patterson's comments have not been uploaded yet, but in his discussion with Evan Smith today, Patterson came out in support of a statewide property tax to replace the "byzantine" tax structure that currently exists with the property tax cap and over a thousand taxing districts.
Personally, I think Patterson is right. A simplified tax structure will help tax payers and possibly keep the state out of court for the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately, he will probably tax a lot of heat for his support for a statewide property tax.

Should say “take” instead of “tax in that last sentence.

Jerry wants Texas to be California!

I don’t like it. We’ll end up with an additional tax.

Exactly. They will add an tax to the existing taxes. It will be the State of Taxes not Texas.

Property taxes are evil and abused, no matter if they are administered by local or state governments. Just say NO to them, period.

Dewhurst needs to be gone. But I'm not interested in replacing him with another big government RINO.
I had tentatively leaned to supporting Patterson. No more unless he refutes a state property tax.
Give Dewhurst the Boot in 2014 (((Ping List)))

This is a low volume ping list at this time.

Just another transfer of wealth scheme.

So, would we end up with a statewide school district?
Will Texas tell “rich” districts to keep subsidizing the “poor” ones?

At least the local politicians are close to hand if rope and lamp-posts are required.
I can annoy them personally on a regular basis, and have a much greater impact on their election.

Sounds like Robin Hood Redux.

Robin Hood sucks!
Not sure how the state being involved would help.

Patterson can KMA. We already have a "statewide" property tax through Robin Hood.
If he had any smarts, he would work on a platform of lower property taxes since the educational system seems to be putting out a sorry excuse for a product.

Will that mean that the appraisal will be statewide too?
And then you will have to go to Austin to appeal your appraisal?
To: GeronL
Don’t we already have that with “Robin Hood”?

Yeah, as draconian as our local property taxes are, the ability to restrain state politicos from going whole hog on a statewide property tax structure would be harder to manage.

Maybe it would help if we stop building high school football stadiums that NFL teams would envy.

but right now “rich” districts can spend additional money on themselves that won’t be allowed if the state controls the tax rates and they can’t add to what the states doles out to them.
We are going to end up with lowest common denominator schools statewide.

IIRC Robin Hood went after the tax collectors to return the money to the people, it's a shame the tale got twisted to taking money from the rich to the poor.
BTW, say NO to this, this is one of the pluses Texas has over many States. Anyhoo, funding public education, you might as well take the money and toss it into rathole.

did not rule out supporting a statewide property tax to benefit public education funding,
*************
Take from the wealthy to give to the poor. Granted property assessment across the varying districts are anywhere near equal. Just look at some of the top football complexes amongst some of the high schools.
However education needs to be funded via some method be it property tax, sales tax, or some other method of taking the money from the populace.
