DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The Michigan Department of Transportation says one-fifth of the lights along freeways in Metro Detroit aren’t working — and copper thieves are mainly to blame. [...] MDOT has identified the area around I-94, east of I-75, as one of the worst hit by thieves. “We are taking measures to try to keep the cabinets safe and secure, but for every move we make, the thieves come up with a counter-move,” said Morosi. [...} And those counter-moves are sometimes deadly. In October, a 34-year-old man was electrocuted at Putnam and Lawton, near I-96, while attempting to steal copper wire from a transformer...

the guy that got fried wasn’t too bright

Pretty good pun (BRIGHT), if intended. I wouldn’t be surprised if the city was somehow sued for his “untimely” death.

I think people would be rather surprised it they took a detailed look at the numbers on muslims in the USA.

The last I read, Michigan ranked 6th in total muslim citizens with California, New York, and New Jersey leading the list. Even Texas made the top 10, coming in at 8th.

Detroit is a whipping boy but in the end I think they’ll come out on top because of the very things people ignore. There is a lot of high dollar property being bought at bargain prices along the river. If I were looking to invest in a future, I wouldn’t be looking at Chicago, NY, or LA. I’d be looking at Detroit because the state is actually trying to ease restrictions and taxes on business.

It’s a shame to see what has happened to Detroit, it used be an incredible town back in the late 50’s early 60’s.

I used to work on the border between Detroit and Dearborn. It’s not “politically correct” [chortle] to observe on FR, but the ME’s saved Dearborn from the rampaging horde.

That’s like saying Hitler avoided a Communist takeover of Germany in the 1930s.

If they’re jonesing for their next hit of meth, their brains aren’t working too well and they’d never equate ‘hum = live electricity = big zap’.

If you haven’t yet read the comments posted by readers on this article (published by a CBS affiliated outlet) then you might want to check ‘em out. Some are hilarious but most accurately describe the pathetic state of the city — and the reasons for it.

I’ve been told that many of the new small businesses in Dearborn are owned by Christians who escaped persecution in their native ME lands.

“Detroit looks more like Lord of the Flies every day”

Lord of the Flies was a work of fiction.

If you want a comparison for Detroit's downward trajectory Zimbabwe is the best example. Zimbabwe is a real life model of what is happening in Detroit. The only difference is that Zimbabwe does not have billions of taxpayer dollars from honest Americans every year to fund their theft and corruption. Zimbabwe also doesn't have white suburbs its residents can repeatedly rob.

There’s plenty to dislike about the muslims but they definitely aren’t Detroit’s biggest problem.

There is a strong contingent of Chaldeans in the Detroit area. And interestingly, they are not averse to working behind bulletproof glass.

I believe Chaldeans are the single largest group of arab people in the Detroit area.

I haven’t been to Dearborn in a while, but I’m fairly certain that the streetlights are still on, the houses are still nicely-kept, and the restaurants still fantastic.

Yeah. I like the one about the guy training to be an electrician failing OJT.

Unfortunately it’s not because they are dying off, just moving on to other lands to ravish.

but for every move we make, the thieves come up with a counter-move,”... And those counter-moves are sometimes deadly... a 34-year-old man was electrocuted... while attempting to steal copper wire from a transformer...

Just a suggestion, but instead of making moves to insulate and protect the copper, perhaps take the opposite tact, and make them totally within reach. Might take a few sensational headlines, but should dry up the well of thieves eventually...
