To solve our debt problems, let’s sell Alaska
Washington Post ^ | 2/25/13 | WP

To solve our debt problems, let’s sell Alaska Treadwell makes a strong case for a home-grown offer. He notes that of Alaska’s 365 million acres, the state government already owns 103 million, which were deeded at the time of statehood. An additional 44 million acres came with the Alaska Native Claims Act. “U.S. cash in our till would barely cover a week of federal deficits, but we believe the potential here is worth trillions, especially if we gained freedom to drill it,” Treadwell said. “Location, location, location.”

ConservativeInPA is the correct post. The premise that the Federal govt can own or sell a soveriegn state’s land is false.

Why should Alaska want to stay in the US? I’d be shocked if it was due to the Entitled. But nothing should surprise us anymore.

God is not going to save us (unfortunately).

This is all going to continue down the slippery slope and have to play itself out to the sadly obvious conclusion.

Odds are nearly non existent that it won’t involve significant violence and the severe suffering of a lot of people.

I am very sad to see my great country already turned into a fascist crap hole where the *majority* of the people have no understanding of, nor amazingly any desire for, the liberties our ancestors suffered and died for. Makes me sick.

Fence off certain states in the northeast, instead.

Shortsighted solution.

Once the Obama/Gore Global Warming kicks in Alaska will have a climate like Hawaii and we will see citrus orchards and tomato fields where only polar bears roam today.

ONE THING; The largest GOLD, Copper, Molybdenum discovery ever made on this planet has been discovered right by Anchorage(Pebble Mine)..
Above ground you do not have to dig for it..

Most of Alaska has coal deposits a few feet underground..
Theres more natural gas that’s even been registered.. but what is registered is humongous.. Then there’e the oil... most of which is off limits on federal land.. but not all..

Then; theres the fish.. crabs, clams, and shrimp..
Alaska is almost as half as big as the lower 48... ITSELF..

>>>Alaska is a Republic waiting to happen if it wasn’t for the native welfare population.<<<

I live in a village which is about 70 percent Alaska Native. Actually, everyone is on welfare up here, in all races, but out of all the racial groups, the Natives are better off than anyone else. Let me explain.

Lots of people work in some sort of government job (I’m a teacher in a public school, for instance). That’s true both out here in the Bush and on the road in places like Anchorage and Fairbanks. However, the Native population has something that will save them in the long run. I’ve lived here most of my adult life, so I know what I’m saying.

There is a long tradition of subsistence living among the Native population (and among those of us living with them out here). This means that people spend a significant part of their year harvesting, hunting, and processing game animals and berries. A lot of families here catch hundreds of salmon, a moose, a bear, buckets of berries, and other fish that happen to come into the net, and that takes a lot of hard work. Yes, there is a lot of welfare, too, but there is still a tradition of hard work and productive effort. All of my students go to fish camp. In addition, we have to grow a lot of our own food in home gardens, and learn to store it for the winter.

You see some of this on the road, and a bit of it in the cities, but out here, it’s a powerful force in the lives of the people who live here.

What the Native people tell me is that they expect welfare to disappear one day, along with a lot of the outsiders looking for oil and gold. (They would like me and my family to stay, though.) If the welfare vanished, a lot of my Native neighbors would shrug their shoulders and go on with their lives. This is very different from what I’d expect from the welfared populations in the Lower 48 cities, but it’s about what I’d think would happen in Appalachia and the South, too.

A lot of us expect that Alaskan Republic to appear one day anyhow. Selling us off to the Russians or the Chinese would be war, and the Natives would be fighting along with everyone else. And since a lot of Natives grew up with guns, many are wicked shots; some of my students graduated to become snipers in the Army Rangers fighting in vague locations in the Middle East.

Be well down there. Keep warm.

Don’t go discounting the idea of selling Alaska too quickly. There is a jobs angle: think of all the workers that would be hired to rip one star off every American flag in the country.

Given California’s lefty leanings, disastrous finances and illegal drug culture they would be a natural fit with Mexico. Let’s GIVE Cal to Mexico.

Everybody wins!

Why sell one of the few states that’s actually an asset?

Any accounts receivable rep will tell you to sell the deadbeats.

The secret to saving America is to purge from the union the Neo Europa states north and east of New York. Once they are gone things will begin to turn around.
