It was at Penney's that I discovered my all time favorite shoes...Avia. They sold for about $55 but were discounted down to $28 plus I had a coupon for any purchase of over $25 for $10 so my cost was only $18.

If Ron Johnson wants me back in Penney's, he has to give me deals like that again.

I haven’t been in one in years, but yes, what regular people want is discount retailers, not high end prices on everyday kit.

Our local JCP used to have an middle aged white guy working there who was a real expert on suits. He really took his time with you trying to find the right suit type and fit. This guy struck me as a throwback to an earlier time (1950s) in retail, but it was nice having someone who really knew his stuff. As opposed to some twentysomething.

Yeah, he’ll make up the money he loses selling you a shoe for $18 by volume.

I have no problem with the clothing selections at JCP. I spent over $300 a couple of years ago on clothes. But then I found that they wanted the Ellen Degeneres crowd as their primary clientele and did ads showing same-sex “parents.” I no longer identify with them. They now rank with Walgreens in my mind, who proudly support the Chicago gay parades where perverts march naked handling each other in the streets.
