Any doubters need only to look at the skyrocketing national debt and unsustainable deficits. No one who cares about the country and future generations would spend like that. Digging a hole is one thing; digging a grave is another.
Bringing up the national debt and deficits doesn't persuade or convince anyone who doesn't already pay a lot of taxes. These macro issues seem far away, abstract, arbitrary, another world, not relevant in any way to them personally. I think of people in their 20s and 30s I know working working in fast food and retail. If you could manage to pin a fairly knowledgeable one down on the subject and away from his iPad he'll say something like: "If the deficit is 800 trillion this year why can't it be 850 trillion next year. Everything grows. The economy grows. My food stamps grow". You'll need a different issue to convert these younger people.
