Short Version: Only through convincing people that the police and a benevolent government will protect them can we successfully ban the private ownership of firearms.

Somebody needs to remind the idiots that the police not only can’t protect you, they are not required to protect you.

There’s a lot of us that know better. There’s a bunch that believe the other way. Lambs to slaughter. But it is a gannett publication so what else would you expect?

Even if the police were around me 24/7, I am still not giving up my GOD given right of self defense because some nanny-state liberal says so.

Taking my guns makes NO one safer except those with evil intent. And that's not just common criminals, but tyrants of all kinds, foreign and domestic.

Molan Labe!

Robert Dallek (the author, who seems more sympathetic to the Dr. Who Daleks than to America’s Founding Fathers) wants to frame gun ownership as an irrational response to fear. Any sane person reading his diatribe advocating for a new Joseph Goebbels to shape public opinions and convince us that government is our best friend and worthy of a monopoly on power would be even more fearful than before. I’m going online to buy another gun in response to my fear of people like him.

I would worry about that but mine were all disappeared by a tornado.

If we had any surface water around these parts, I would have run the risk of a tragic boating incident. But alas, we don't.

Nazis and their enablers. May they meet the same fate as their German forefathers.

HIV/Aids is the leading cause of death for gay men. Perhaps we should also be discussing a cultural change in that “community” - hmmm?

chirping crickets...

Bottom line: like most issues about which liberals “care” (e.g. womens “rights”, moochelle keeping children waiting for HOURS), it becomes obvious that it is not the person about which liberals care, rather, it is CONTROL of the system (and in the end - choices) about which liberals are obsessed.

One observation about choices: because gays, Muslims, and (pot only) smokers regularly make choices that are harmful either to the individual or the community, these are always given a pass if the action is by definition, anti-Christian.

Exactly! Because the 20th century has proven that big governments who disarmed their citizens were only just looking out for the best interests of their constituents. Stalin, Mao, and Hitler were really just misunderstood visionaries, really. So all of you stubborn Americans attached to your quaint Constitutional ideals, you just need to take your place amongst the bones of all of the other hundreds of millions of non-believers who did not follow the correct path to true enlightenment brought forth by the your glorius leaders!

(seriously?>sarc).

The challenge for this generation of Americans is to address not only our own fears by curbing access to guns, but also to reassure the country's most devoted gun advocates that their government is not after them.

Yes, and the most effective way for our government to take on that oh-so-benign image is to:

1. Announce that returning veterans, pro-lifers, Tea Partiers, those who don't support Obama, and strong border advocates are viewed as "potentially extremist,"

2. Put semi-automatic weapons into the hands of Mexican drug cartels,

3. Go on an ammunition buying binge of 1.6 billion rounds,

4. Purchase 3,000 mine-resistant, armored MRAPs for use on AMERICAN streets,

5. Activate 30,000 drones for flight America's skies,

6. Make the announcement some of those drones can be weaponized for strikes against Americans deemed as possible "extremists" (see #1) WITHOUT DUE PROCESS and ON AMERICAN TERRITORY,

7. Broaden criminalization of erstwhile normal activity in order to thin the ranks of "legal" gun owners, and

8. Push to outlaw every possible privately owned weapon.

Yeah... that'll change this government's image to "harmless little fuzzball" status in no time.

And when the SHTF, this idiot Robert Dallek’s home will be looted by feral youths and they will most likely beat him to a bloody pulp, or worse.

That is when this fool might, just might, realize he was wrong about self defense, but it will be too late for him.

He probably has a loaded Glock stashed away.. just in case.. because, after all, America has such a violent gun culture. Remember Carl Rowan?

Only a person bordering on full-blown psychotic delusion could write the nonsense Dallek is spewing.

In other words: exactly the type of person I keep a firearm for.

Everything he says defeats everything he’s trying to say.

For years I read US News at lunch.

A year or more ago I changed to the Wall Street Journal, which has far better news coverage.

Yesterday the management put a US News on my table and I read it.

I just can not believe how much more liberal it has become.

Most of yesterday’s was global warming and gun control.

In spite of the fact that the co-founder of Weather Channel came out the day before with numbers that destroys the idea that we are in a period of global warming.

US News is nothing but a propaganda rag.
