MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) -- Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford on Tuesday cleared another hurdle in his bid for a political comeback, defeating a former county council member to win the GOP nomination for a vacant U.S. House seat.
With 96 percent of precincts reporting, Sanford had about 57 percent of the vote to 43 percent for Curtis Bostic, a former Charleston County Council member. The candidates were vying Tuesday in a GOP runoff in the 1st Congressional District, which covers the south coast.
Sanford will face Elizabeth Colbert Busch and Green Party candidate Eugene Platt in a May special election. She is the sister of political satirist Stephen Colbert.
The former three-term congressman and two-term governor saw his political career sidelined four years ago when he disappeared from the state only to return and confess to an extramarital affair with an Argentine woman to whom he is now engaged.

Hey, is there something wrong with a few filthy lies and wallowing with a hot hoochie mama? I mean, is it classy to have a whoremonger carrying the conservative banner next to his home wrecking paramour ? Be proud of his efforts to support small business, as in the world’s oldest profession? Heck, let’s buy her a tax-exempt public lamppost from which to ply her trade.
With all due respect, Sanford will obliterate Colbert. This race was decided tonight. This district voted for Mitt Romney by 19 points. In a non-Presidential election, I suspect Sanford will defeat Colbert by 25-30 points.
I think this irony with our new splendid strumpet deserves a song....
We thought mark was striding manly up along the Appalachian Trail
Only to find that really he was sniffing Argentinian Tail
When he should have been next to honest Jennie, faithfully a snorin'
Turns out that governor Mark Sanford had really gone a whorin'
Fine. Rather than be humiliated by that horny old Romeo again, sign me up to elect the silly cow.
Aside from Sanford’s failed marriage, he’s been a great legislator & Governor. He has always supported fiscal restraint and low taxes.
In other news, the Daily Kos is thrilled with the Sanford win.
Was that lack of physical restraint and low company? He lied to his sate when he lied to his family. He’s a liar, however much his cockmanship may be admired by the “ I’d hit that” crowd.
Yes, you’re right, he probably did lie to his wife. People make mistakes. You may recall that other Republican Presidents have been divorced and/or made mistakes in their personal lives as well.
A "mistake" is forgetting to carry the 1, while doing addition......What Sanford did was just plain wrong, and he knew it was wrong when he was doing it.
His hooker's not loaded like Jennie, and I always wondered how he was making his ends meet. Do you know?
Yes, you’re right, I’m sure he knew it wrong when he did it. I don’t know about you, but if I cast aside every one of my friends who made a serious mistake or had a bad lapse in judgment, I wouldn’t have any friends left.
On the whole, I think Sanford has been an honest broker in government and I have no doubt his fiscal record in the House will be stellar.
Actually, I'm starting to think you're an operative.
That's why he want to go back to DC..to get on the career gravy train. Best benefits in the country. Welcome to America, Ms. Argentina.
Sanford doesn’t need to be elected to Congress to “get on” the gravy train. He’s already on it. From his prior stint in Congress, he eventually will have available to him a congressional pension.
He may also receive a military pension. He began serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve in 2002 and carries the rank of captain.
And he will also be eligible to receive a SC state pension because he has served at least five years as governor.
They don't look happy, and they are being used as props.
Dad's a real a-hole.
Look at the net worth of those in Congress from when they enter to several years after being elected. Huge jump. Nice work, if you can get it.
Maria probably wants an intro to Barney Frank to get ideas for a boutique in house business...
Oh, but she luffs heem!
Our hearts go out to these boys. If their dad had an ounce of character, he’d of kept them out of the spotlight and worked on his relationship with his sons.
She’s got a kid, you know. In the buenos aires house when Mark visited. Ewwww.
