This Map Of US Female Mortality Will Break Your Heart

In a speech at the Women In The World summit Friday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton mentioned a startling fact:

Women in the U.S. are living shorter lives than women in almost every other industrialized country. And worse yet, female mortality rates are actually rising in many parts of the country.

"Think about it for a minute. We are the richest and most powerful country in the world," Clinton said. "Yet many American women today are living shorter lives than their mothers, especially those with the least education. That is a historic reversal that rivals the decline in life expectancy for Russian men after the disintegration of the Soviet Union."

We looked into Clinton's claims, and it appears she is correct.

A study published last month by the Journal of Health Affairs found that between 1992-96 and 2002-06, the number of premature deaths actually rose for women in some parts of the country

The research, conducted by David Kindig and Erika Cheng of the University of Wisconsin, found that nationally the female mortality rate fell from 324 to 318 per 100,000 during that period.

But in 42.3 percent of counties, the female mortality rate rose, from 317 to about 333 per 100,000. Male mortality rates, by contrast, rose in only about 3 percent of counties.

Check out the map below, via Bill Gardner at the Incidental Economist. Red means that mortality worsened.

As Clinton noted in her speech, the reasons for this trend are varied.

“We did find significant associations between mortality rates and some of these factors, such as smoking rates for both sexes," Kindig and Cheng wrote. "But socioeconomic factors

Women MAY be dying earlier but it is because of stress from doing ‘it all’. Remember when the Feminists said we could ‘have it all’? It really meant we would just have to do it ALL. Work, take care of kids, clean, cook, laundry, etc., etc., etc.

This. And definitely....this.

If that’s the case, than why is it that according to the map, more conservative, rural counties are suffering this problem more than liberal leaning urban/suburban ones?

I'm sure there are lots of local stories in play, but very broadly, the problem counties consist heavily of Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta, and Indian country. This will not surprise anyone who has paid attention to rural development issues.

Yes, it would be interesting to see a breakout by ethnicity.

It would also be interesting to see crosstabs on urban/rural, and counties that are losing population vs. counties that are growing.

A lot of rural counties have been losing population for decades and have aging populations. To compound the issue, since good jobs are scarce in declining counties, the young people who stay are disproportionately the left-behinds.

A few of the sharp young people come home to take over family businesses and farms, or to be the next generation of small town teachers, doctors, and lawyers, but these numbers are limited. Most young people with educations leave for good, while the welfare classes stay.

Meth is a rural plague, and alcoholism is always a factor.

“But as a whole, the map is meaningless.”

Or- it means something, but there is no way to have clarity about what that is. And maybe that is the point. The map is an “empty vessel” into which anything useful to advance the Liberal Agenda can be poured and then used to advantage.

This does not surprise me at all...

"least education" is semantics for school drop out, baby mommas, obese, smoking, Cheetos munching, Mountain Dew big gulp guzzling women of all races...who can't cook a healthy decent meal if their life depending on it

They are just waiting to be a health train wreck later in life...dying early and an expensive death..

the huge number of children born out of wedlock (72%?)indicates that lifestyle is a contributing factor.

“So, just as men die younger, women are dying younger too!”

My thoughts exactly. Also, when the difference in lifespan for married versus single men is brought up (in which married men live longer), that has to come into play here as well - more women aren’t getting married.

thank goodness too.

The only thing good about Obama having to be president for 3 1/2 more years is that Hillary will be 3 1/2 years older !

I know it will result in my own early death. I stayed home with my kids, but have now gone back to school and am about to embark on a relatively stressful career, well, because we need the money to pay the taxes and to have two beans at the end of our lives, maybe a few cents to pass on. I barely have time for myself, and yet STILL have to manage the household because hubby just doesn’t know much about the finer details of cleaning, cooking, etc. It’s just too much. When I was younger, most women MY age were out on the golf course, or home cooking, cleaning, decorating, relaxing finally ...

Granted, I will NEVER be depressed or suffer the empty nest sadness syndrome ...don’t have time. So who knows . . . I just do not have 2 hours to spend at the gym everyday.

I think Hillary is a liar, and is probably trolling for funding in some area ...it’s what she does.

Government handouts and unemployment benefits and government employment are in the blue counties. The red ones are the ones footing the bills. No wonder the stress levels are rising.

I work in a nursing home. Two weeks ago we had a 107 year old woman die. A couple of months before we had another 107 year old die. We have lots of women in their mid-to-upper 90 year olds. A lot of them are in relatively good health. Anecdotal, I know. My grandmother was born in 1879 and lived to be 100.

The mortality rate for men is almost always higher than that of women, but this seems to escape these researchers

Well, I definitely think that 70s feminism was a disaster for everyone but white, middle-class, educated women with connections and/or tremendous drive (a good thing). The rest ended up divorced, single parents, working pink-collar jobs and, generally, having a life of drudgery.

No doubt, this is the Republicans’ fault. When Hillary runs, she will promise eternal life to all women who vote for her. And she’ll win because there are so many pathetically gullible women in the USA.

Can't speak for the entire country but in the rural south a majority of women were already working out of necessity before any feminist movement took root.

The rural south has been hit hard by trade policy and job loss. If women are statistically living shorter lives now compared to their mothers who likely worked, then working is not the cause. Not working is more likely to be causative.

Rural working class are inexorably sliding into poverty and dependence as a direct result of trade policy. With poverty and dependence comes hopelessness and substance abuse.

I see it all the time, former textile or furniture mill towns half deserted, what people remaining clearly on government assistance, otherwise they wouldn't be unoccupied during the course of the day. With poverty and government assistance comes Medicaid.

Hillary Clinton no doubt believed herself to be making a case for further government intervention and assistance via Obamacare with this “startling” statistic, but if anything it actually refutes her argument. For those who live in the rural south or on the urban fringe of it and see just what has been happening for twenty years or more, we're not exactly “startled.”

It was an inevitability.

Then, you have rural southern counties showing some improvement. What might be behind that, given the above? I can only speak for NC but I'd suggest looking at the racial makeup of those counties. In NC they're counties with a high percentage of black population, some actually majority black. Government efforts to improve mortality rates for black people have had some success. Of course, dependency and despondency has long been a problem in these communities, so stabilization or marginal improvement is not as difficult to achieve. Such individuals have little resistance to government programs and control, either.

So, what you're looking at is the toll of job loss upon rural working class white females. If they're dying off early it's the government that ultimately caused it, but Hillary Clinton proposes to ride in on a white horse (poor thing) and save them all... with more government.

Classic statist strategy, cause a problem, exacerbate it, then propose the "solution" that leads to more statist intervention. Then wash, rinse and repeat.

No, it's because they're too fat.
