Harry Reid doesn't have the votes to pass gun control
American Thinker ^ | 04/16/2013 | Rick Moran

The question now becomes, will he ever?

From Politico:

The White House and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are shy of the 60 votes they need to move the bipartisan compromise bill on background checks for gun sales. Vice President Joe Biden has been personally calling senators to urge them to support the measure, Democratic aides say.

Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) began a whip count on Monday, Democratic aides said, and Biden has been pressuring his fellow Democrats to fall in line. Biden's office did not return an email seeking comment.

Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) are co-sponsoring the proposal that would expand background checks for commercial gun purchases -- including those at gun shows and online -- opening a pathway for the biggest change in U.S. gun laws in nearly two decades.

A cloture vote on the Manchin-Toomey could come by Thursday, Democrats said. Toomey on Monday afternoon acknowledged they don't yet have the votes.

"I'm cautiously optimistic. We're not there at the moment but were working on it," Toomey said.

Manchin also said supporters were short of the votes needed to overcome a GOP filibuster, but he remained hopeful that it would pass.

"We're still working it, it's very close," Manchin told reporters. "I agree [with Toomey], it's very close."

Manchin added: "I'm talking to everybody."

Manchin will appear with former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) on Tuesday to press for its passage. Giffords was seriously wounded in a January 2011 shooting that left six others dead. Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, have become high-profile backers of new gun regulations.

Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) are attempting to hash out a floor procedure laying out votes on the Manchin-Toomey proposal.

The Democrat side of the senate is the problem for Reid.

Democratic fence sitters aren't budging:

Reid is likely to lose three of his 55 Senate Democrats -- Mark Begich (D-Alaska), Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and Max Baucus (D-Mont.). All three Democrats said on Monday that they were still reviewing the proposal and would not commit to backing it. Several other Democratic swing votes include Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Mary Landrieu (La.), and Joe Donnelly (Ind.).

It’s not over ‘til it’s over, our very own political scum are capable of anything ala Obamacare.

Remember Obamacare. The single worse piece of legislation ever didn’t have the votes either. A little funding for an airport in Nebraska sealed the deal.

I have not heard if their phones are jammed and email boxes are full.

Who do we have on the inside?

Just keep on hammering them - we have targets now...!

It doesn’t matter since the dems do not have the House. All of that can be stripped from the Bill.

While the news certainly could be worse, I think most of us get the feeling that we are being set up for some kind of “last minute compromise”...where the Dems, again, get everything.

...but maybe not. Gun control is an election-killer if you get on the wrong side of it. People seem to forget just about every other vote - but they do remember who is going after their guns, and their rights.

If everybody is thinking about bombs, what affect does that have on the gun control issue?

Am I evil for thinking “at least they didn’t use a Modern Sporting Rifle with standard capacity magazines to open up on the crowd?”

I’m sure the necessary number of republican traitors will rise to cover the cowardly fence sitting democrats.

I’m sure McCain and Goober can’t wait.

By an amazing coincidence, all three - Begich, Prior and Baucus - must face their voters in 2014.

It just means we have to add an amendment concerning bomb control/confiscation...

They're just holding our for the right price so they can shower their states with pork to blunt the outrage after they fall in line. This applies ESPECIALLY to Mary Landrieu and Max Baucus.

“It doesn’t matter since the dems do not have the House. All of that can be stripped from the Bill.”

Likely so, but I almost think their 2014 strategy is to give PURE TRASH to the House, and then call them a “Do Nothing Congress” for not passing that garbage. So if we stop them in the Senate, that game plan goes away.

This bill was on life support yesterday before the bombing and now the MSM cameras have moved away from the Dec 2012 CT school shooting and Obama’s weeping moms onto this fresh story with fresh victims to talk about.

Examples :

Would the Senate bill have stopped this bombing?
They why are you (obama) talking about it still?

Biden has nothing better to do than call Senators on this worthless bill after what happened in MA?

Take no chances. Amendments need to be offered for universal reprocity of conceal carry licenses and the lifting of the Hughes amendment to the firearm owners protection act.

It’s Whorehouse Harry.

Hey’ll purchase, blackmail, or simply fake the votes.

He - like the rest of his pathetic party - is slime.]

That’s s - l - i - m - e.

And hopefully, we’ll scoop him up, flush him, and watch him join others of his ilk. (They float.)

By an even more amazing coincidence, Manchin the Traitor (who less than a year ago was reveling in his NRA "A" rating and endorsement), and who is one of the chief architects of this legislative treason, doesn't have to face the voters for six years.

Not so fast -

Many of the under-the-table deals to buy the votes of senate whores have not yet been finalized.
