Billionaires Battle Over Media Influence: Koch Brothers/Murdoch Vs. Soros/Buffett/GE

Oh golly, what a horrifying thought! Yes, rumor has it that those conservative Big Oil Koch brothers may purchase and politically pollute the Tribune Co., a company which owns the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Hartford Courant, Baltimore Sun and other bastions of mainstream moderation. Can you imagine that? Isn’t it bad enough to have Rupert Murdoch and his Fox Cable News and Fox Broadcasting Company Network out there stirring things up?

Liberal Doses of Angst:

As noted by Joe Strupp of Media Matters, this prospect is downright scary. He writes: “The Kochs are major funders of the American conservative movement, funneling tens of millions of dollars every year to build a right-wing infrastructure geared toward reducing the size and impact of government…A staffer in the Tribune Company Washington bureau warned that such an arrangement could destroy the credibility of the papers: ‘I am hard –pressed to think of any excursion into traditional media that has been ideologically-driven the way this one would be. The analogy might be Fox News or the Washington Times. The more ideological it is, the fewer people will read it and take it seriously’.”

The New York Times warns that the deal will create “a broader platform for the Kochs’ laissez-faire ideas”. National Public Radio even announced that several Tribune Co. newspaper reporters told them they “felt a sting of coordinated campaigns to harass them”.

It’s difficult to contemplate how terrifying all of this must be from a buy-out hostage perspective. According to L.A. Times writer David Horsey, “Newspapers continue to provide most of the comprehensive coverage of government, business and society at large that is essential to democracy. It would seem like a terrible idea to turn that function over to rich industrialists seeking a megaphone for their self-serving political views,

After all, having that megaphone dominated by anti-American communist-leaning liberals for THEIR self-serving political views has worked out so well...

It’s the way of the Democrat party: accuse others of attempting to do what you are doing.

I hope the Koch’s do buy these newspapers, but it will require something more from them.

To have those newspapers good enough to print and sell, the Kochs will have to build and staff a journalism school that actually teaches objective reporting, journalism, and editing. Not political correctness, prejudice, bias, slant and spin, and above all abject ignorance of what they are writing about. Which is what other journalism schools crank out.

This journalism school will hard to set up and staff, but will provide a quality stream of hires to the Koch papers, and with quality comes increased circulation. They should recruit college graduates with degrees in other subjects, former military personnel, and others with credibility, so that what they write about is backed by facts, not just AP press release news given local spin.

I would strongly recommend also that the newspapers adopt several sections that used to be prominent in newspapers, such as a crime section and local news, which big city newspapers stopped doing to their detriment.

Abolish many of the conventions liberal journalists have adopted, such as identifying race problems, rejecting false labels, such as “undocumented immigrants”, calling Israel “Palestine”, calling Muslim terrorists whatever euphemism they are called now, etc.

Since these are all liberal contrivances, and they will call anyone who doesn’t follow them “right wing”, so be it. Objectivity needs no defense from those who lie.

Fire most of the writers and editors. Hire graduates of Patrick Henry, Liberty and Heritage.

While they might be good pickups, giving them unique, formal training in a standardized manner would still be a good idea in the long run.

I see the (Koch) journalism schools offering three “degrees” as it were.

The lowest is a reporter degree with their specialty, which would be the subject they graduated with from college. Their training would be in strict objectivism, being able to spot bias in writing, and to report complex events as accurately as they could.

The middle degree would be a real journalism degree, much like a Master’s degree, focusing on analysis of information to draw conclusions not evident on the surface, as well as citing historical and contextual information, and spotting dishonesty, hypocrisy, and deceit and calling others on it.

The advanced degree, an editors degree, would be like a PhD, people who are very educated and literate, whose job it is to police up errors by reporters and journalists before they were published.

Added all up, the average IQ of such people would be 50 points higher than the average of a typical newspaper.
